SEWELL IS AT HOME IN MUD. CLOSES A BIG GAP AND WINS GLEN COVE HANDICAP EASILY. Carthage Makes it Four Straight by Cantering Away with the Mile and a Quarter Handicap at Brighton. New York, July 2!. Excepting in tin. third and last races, reduced fields of starters participated in tin racing ft Brighton Beach today. The steady drizzle, which began tlurinir the middle of the forenoon ami cimtimicil uninterriiiiteilly until the last rare, made the track greasy at iirst anil sloppy afterward. The uncertain state of the going was resHiiisihle for the withdrawals of the two crack juveniles 1nele and Nimbus in the second and their absence robbed it of practically all interest. From the same cause the denuded tirst race, which had promised so much, was greatly depreciated as an attraction. The !1pii Cove Handicap was the feature and had as. starters W. II. Daniel, making his first appearance of tiie season, Sewell, Bat Mastersou, Botanist and Ion Enrique. The market on this distinguished quintette Uuetuated considerably. Everybody wanted AV. II. Daniel at the beginning, but the Hurry on that horse quickly ceased and his price receded steadily to 21 to 1 at the close with no takers. An early inclination to back Sewell at "1 to 1 soon developed, but that too died away, his odds drifting back finally to 31 to 1. Hat Masterson anil Botanist were the big money carriers, both were the mediums of some tremendous plunging, the former going to the post a hot favorite at 8 to 5 and the latter hacked down from ir to S. liotanist, the longest priced one of the pair, performed in really brilliant fashion and would have won had he been opposed by any ordinary mud runner, but in the winner he succumbed to a superlative performer in muddy going. The start seemingly eliminated Sewell as a contender, he was so badly off. Not less than lifteen lengths separated him from the Hying leader. This big gap he proceeded to close in business-like fashion. Very few took any notice of their hopelessly distant trailer and when he suddenly loomed up in an electrical sprint on the turn everybody Flood up and yelled. It was mere play for Sewell. to pick up his opponents in the stretch and lie won a remarkable race in Midi commanding style it became one of lie chief topics of conversation during the remainder of the afternoon. The forward running of Botanist created much surprise. W. II. Daniel, though beaten, was not disgraced. The splendid Wools! horpe colt has developed into a grand looking three-year old and with another race or two under his belt. It should be an easy future task to dispose of horses of the calibre that he met today. The tabled history of the Glen Cove Handicap is as follows: Year. Winner. Wt. Jockey. Val. The Wcrn-berg mare was almost backed off the boards and started at odds-on. The 10 to 1 shot Azora would have upset the good tiling could Grand, her jockey, have stopped long enough to wipe the mud out of his eyes. Live Wire was a receding favorite for the second race, going back from even to 0 to 3, but lie won just the same. B. K. Bradley won a big bet on Troublemaker when that improving three-year-old decisively beat lifteen horses at three-quarters of a mile in the third race, lie was hacked down several points, closing at C to 1. Carthage, the splendid western horse, was never extended at any stage of the mile and a quarter journey, winning the fifth race from live others with ridiculous case. Kverybody, it seemed, backed him and about all the applause that the wet and bedraggled spectators had in reserve was forthcoming for Captain Williams gallant thoroughbred. King Cobalt in the last was the third winner during the afternoon that had been sired by Cesar-ion. He was also the fourth successful favorite and the majority of the 12,000 race-goers left the track cheerful beneliciaries. .Toe Marrone was a bidder-up in two instances, lie advanced Druid to ,200 and Troublemaker to 2,000 before he stopped. Both winners were bought in by their respective owners. The stewards lined Frank H. Gardner 5 for .failure to scratch Countermand out of the last race "today. Thomas Magee, Edward Corrigans private secretary, spent Saturday at Brighton Beach and left for a brief visit to his old home at Boston.
