SARATOGA TO BE BATTLE GROUND. Madden Will Try to Make Good His Claims for Uncle in the Special. If John Madden is to heat Colin with his colt Tilde, as lie threatens, the trick must be turned In the Saratoga Special, the only stake in whicli the pair are engaged until the fall meeting at Sheepshead Hay, whicli does not begin until August 31. Neither colt has any further stake engagements at I.rlgliton Heach. There is no doubt of Fuclcs quality. lie has run four races, the last three wins. All of the wins were of the commanding order, and the colts size, looks and way of going are most convincing. Hut if he is Colins kind lie has yet to show it. Uncles four races are mapped lielow: Date. Course. Pis. Wt. Ios. Irk. Time. June 1 Helinont Park.l 1-2 112 3h Fast 32 July 3 Holmont Park. 3 107 1 mud 1:00 July 1! I.rlgliton Heach 3-1 120 1 Fast 1:11 July 25-Brighton Heacli3 1-2 122 l3 Fast l:0i Uncle was beaten hut two noses by Cohort and Heaucoup in his first race. He was always in the running, but tired right at the end. Colin and Cohort are not close together. Uncles three wins were impressive ones, but he beat no near champion. Hohinil him in his second race were Nimbus mid Masque. No Colin here. July 1! lie played with Gene Russell and four poor ones, and last Thursday Jubilee, Woodlane and Hlack Oak were the best behind and nearest to him. Again no line on Colin, and the Keene champion Is out of danger, bar great reserve power in Uncle and the great leveler of all horses weight. Hut for the disfigurement of a bad hock Colin would le one of the handsomest as well as -one of the best horses the country lias seen in a long while. His bad hock has evidently caused him no trouMe yet. as he was not lame after the Hrighton Junior, and the enlargement does not seem to be as prominent as when he won the Great Trial Stakes at SueepsUead Hay. The Keene Stable people thoroughly believe tliat Colin is hotter than was Sysonby at the same age. The exerciser, an Intelligent negro, Hob Marshall, maintains without reservation that Colin is the greatest horse that ever bore the Keene colors. Marshall may know, lie developed Peter Pan and Sysonby as well as Colin, and trainer Kowe says his knowledge of what a horse he rides can do is usually keen. Marshall says Colin has more speed than either Sysonby or Peter Pan showed as two-year-olds, and that he thoroughly believes the Commando colt will, if he lasts through this season and trains next year, make a three-year-old that no distance will daunt and no weight will stop. According to Marshall, Colin always keeps something in reserve, no matter how fast he works. Aside from the racing ambition that Colin shows, he has other characteristics of a great racer. He seems to know what is required of him at all times and never wastes his energies. Steer and hold hiin together and he goes to the points of contest without call. He is a voracious feeder and has the temper and disposition of a thoroughbred collie. Then, too, Colin is quiet and sensible at the post and one of the quickest of breakers. All in all, so far, the son of Commando and Pastorella seems to have all the qualities of a champion. New York, July 2!. "Colin has a. thoroughpin on the hock of his right hind leg, but Kacelaiul was affected the same way and was campaigned for a good many years," remarked A. .1. Joyner at Hrighton Poach today, when some one expressed surprise over the matchless racing qualities of Mr. Keenes colt when laboring under such a serious handicap. "It is considered incurable," went on Mr. Joyner, "but as long as it does not hurt him, Colin will train on indefinitely. When it does begin to, affect him he will go down quick."
