FAR WEST WINS HANDICAP. DR. GARDNER QUITS IN THE FEATURE RACE AT SARATOGA. Vails and Miss Doyle the Only Successful Favorites Ben Fleet Scores Again Easy for Boema. Saratoga, N. Y., August !. In tlic absence of a slake lixture tin; handicap at one mile served as t lit; feature race today. Dr. Gardner was the choice of the public, but the support for Far West, Nealon ami Cablegram, which came from supposedly wise quarters, was sullicient to cause the price against the Sullivan borse to recede a point and a half at closing time. Dr. Gardner led for the first live furlongs, but when Far West chaJIenged he -was done ami was shutlted back to lift Ii position at tin; finish. Far West winning easily from Nealon, witli tressina third. The opening race was hardly more than an exercise gallop for Vails. Miss Strome surprised everyone by taking the second race in a drive with I.ally and Sain Bernard, while Davy Johnsons Senator flay, the favorite, was never a contender. It was no trick at all for lien Fleet to beat the favorite Explosion for the third race. Miss Doyle, the public choice for the liftli race, won after a drive with Kilter and the closing race went to Bncnin, which was best, though not backed, and simply cantered at the finish.
