CONDENSED HISTORY OF STAKES DECIDED AT SARATOGA YESTERDAY. The Travcrs is the oldest American stake for three-year-olds, having first been run while the Civil War was raging. In its early days it and the Belmont at Jerome Park were justly deemed the most im portant events of the American turf and its list of placed horses is a splendid galaxy of the stars of American turf history, in the multiplicity of rich events of the present time it does not hold its original high rank, but is stil sufficiently valuable to be favorably regarded by owners. Its long and interesting record is as follows: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Val. Time. Althougli not so valuable, owners of crack two-year-olds are almost as keenly desirous of success in the Saratoga Special as they are of achieving Futurity honors. It has lteen an event of the lirst order from its first running and has always, fallen to a crack two-year-old. It is of recent establishment in comparison with many of the Saratoga Stakes, but none exceeds it in- public interest. Its seventh running took place yesterday afternoon and its record isas follows: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt. Val. Time. 1901 Goldsmith N. The North American Steeplechase is of comparatively recent establishment among the important events for the jumpers. Up to this year il was decided over an about two and a half miles course, but yesterday afternoon the horses were required to go a half mile" farther. The record of the race is as follows: Year. First. Age. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Age. Wt. Third. Age. Wt. Val. Time. 1901 St. .hide 4 .....J.
