MILLER DAY AT JAMAICA. I CRACK JOCKEY GUIDES THREE WINNERS IN SECOND DAYS RACING. Tom McGrath Wins the Gowanus Stakes Juggler in Good Form St. Valentine Wins Again. 3 New York, October 22. Ideal weather and track conditions prevailed during the running of tlie first Tour rates at Jamaica today. After that it blew up cold and disagreeable and race-goers were glad to get away. The solitary stake fixture, the Gowanus Stakes, at six furlongs, attracted a field of moderate class sprinters. Tom McGrath, which performed poorly lu his last precediug start at Brighton Beach, made a show of his opposition today and was well backed. Aside from the stake, the racing was mediocre. The field in the mile and a sixteenth handicap was unable to get to Juggler, which cautered home in fast time. Dolly Spanker, the favorite, was unlucky and interfered with in the stretch. It developed that the winner had worked a mile in a shade less than 1:30. One of the cheapest races of the metropolitan season was run oft as the fifth. It was for three-year-old maidens at five furlongs, the winner to be sold for 00. It was won by Adolph .Spreckels Solitaire II. gelding, Tiro, which closed a hot favorite. The Newcastle Stables good filly Explosion accounted for the first race easily. She was the favorite and, going to the front just after Rosi-miro had set the pace fast to the stretch, drew away rapidly and won eased up. Rosimiro held second place safe from Banyah, but the latter was unlucky in the early running and would probably have been second if off well and favored with a clear course. Voorhees was a confidently backed favorite for the second race, but after he had led nearly all the way. St. Valentine, in good form just now, came with a rush in the last sixteenth and nailed him in the last two strides to win by a good head. Had News was probably the best horse in the race and finished at Voorhees saddle girth, but was incapably ridden.- Punky ran a good race here and is due to win. Juggler eainc out in good form after a long rest in retirement, and had no trouble in disposing of UIght Royal and Dolly Spanker in the third race. In the light, of recent running Dolly Spanker was correctly the favorite, but Juggler was also well backed. Miller kept him in reserve until -well into the stretch, then brought him along fast and won by a big margin, Right Royal a good second and Dolly Spanker a close-up third. Okenite showed speed in this race and is a shifty young horse when fit. The Gowanus Stakes fell to Tom McGrath at the end of a rapidly run three-quarters, in which he led all the way, and gave the others no chance whatever. Few of the second class sprinters have as much speed as Tom McGrath when he is at his best, as he evidently was today. "Handzarra, running in something like her form of other days, put in a good race here and managed to outstay Oraculum for second place, but the latter was coming fast and would have had second place in another stride. Lady Anne ran well and Momentum quit in surprising fashion. The tabulated history of the Gowanus Stakes Is as follows: Year. "Winner. A. AVt Jockey. Val. Time. 11101 Gay Boy 5 113 T. The sixth race was a sprint for two-year-old maiden fillies. Marian Louise, a new starter, showed a remarkable burst of early speed, but failed to stay and Whip Top finally won off by herself with Ida 1. second and Marian Louise third. W. C. Daly claimed Barnev Schreibers beautifully bred Meddler filly. Kllliecraukie, out of the fifth race on Monday for ,010. C. H. Ulllsoifs string kit for .Memphis today.
