BETTER RACING DOWNSOUTH GOOD WEATHER AND TRACK IMPROVE MATTERS AT CITY PARK. Jack- Atkin Shows Nimble Heels to Crack Sprinters Men and Horses Are : Pouring in. Now Orleans, La., December 2. An unusually attractive Monday card was offered race patrons this afternoon and the sport resulting was good and exciting. The fourth race was exceptionally meritorious on account of the presence of several stake horses of more than ordinary caliber. The arrival of a big eastern delegation furnished additional Impetus and the speculation was the best of the meeting. From now on it is predicted that racing will improve rapidly and . exceed the standard of former years. Jack Atkiu, retrieved some of his lost laurels, on account of his crushing defeat iu the Test Stakes by Iinkola. when he led the others home in todays feature race. He showed a marvelous flight of speed and never left the result in doubt, winning eased to a canter near the end from Lord Lovat. while Juggler, under an inetlicient ride, barely took third place. Burlew and ONeill thought highly of their representative and backed him with confidence. That he did not finish better than third was solely the fault of McDaniel, who got him away in a rear position and allowed him to trail far in the rear of the others until well straightened out for the stretch run. The speedy Colloquy, after running in forward pursuit of Jack Atkin to the stretch turn, fell back and was soundly beaten. The showing of Tileing in the race was commendable and in future he will be a sharp factor iu any company. Close finishes came with the running of the first three races, the winners margin in each instance being of the narrowest kind. In the third the placing of Dr. McCluer as winner over Marsh Kedon. met witli disapproval. Marsh Kedon appeared to some to have won. Fifteen started iu the first and second races. Aim gained a narrow victory over Task Master because of Towers superior ride over McDaniel and, Pickens on No Quarter, out-linished Joseph. Hogg on Artful Dodger. The officials of the big tracks delivered the half-mile track across from City Tark a body blow when they announced that any owner iu good standing applying for license would receive due consideration. It is thought that many owners who participated in the racing at the half-mile track will avail themselves of the opportunity to get back into the fold and, by forcing the small track, it is thought very little material will be available to conduct the meeting, which is advertised to open on Wednesday. John Warren was among todays arrivals and is trying to interest horsemen in the proposed thirty day meeting to be held at Tampa, Florida, beginning lebraury 1. Mr. Warren assures horsemen that bookmnkiug with the old style booths will be tolerated by special license. This is the first time in fifteen years that the Florida authorities would allow this. The meeting is said to be backed by Smith and Ierry, of Chicago, Fred Burlew is eager for the associations here to give a special race that will bring together Chapul-tepee and Iinkola at six furlongs. Mr. Uurlew has a high regard for the Fixer representative and stated today that he would give 2,000 for the youngster, conditionally that he meets requirements after inspection. Jockey C. Koerner was suspended for four days by the starter for disobedience at the post. 1. Dunnes Lens had to be a good horse today to overcome the Interference that Brussel on Momentum subjected him to. G. 1!. Hamilton, who shipped Infanta and Seaport from Benning, was forced to unload the last named at Atlanta, Ga., on account of illness. During the day he received advice from the veterinarian in attendance on the colt that he was showing Improvement. Other owners from Washington to arrive today included: Albert Simons, with 10; J. ti arson, G; S. Holman, 7; George Odom, S; J. McLaughlin, 3, and Douglas Carter with a consignment of W. C. Dalys horses. Tom Kiley, who is training Miss Sain, reports that filly fully recovered. The steeplechase brigade here was reinforced considerably by the arrival of J. W. Colts string of six-, C. J. Murrays six, and n. Flippens three. Steeplechase jockeys McClain, C. Chandler and Grantland also got iu at the same time. Jockeys G. Swain, Beckmau, Brussel, K. McDaniel, Fairbrother aud W. Among- the heavy operator to land were m; Demarest, II. Beeves, F. B. Nichols and P. Nagle. Jockey T.
