THE LONG-PRICED WINNERS. To those deluded mortals who dream of some day espying in advance a horse destined to win at such long odds in the betting as fo assume a competence from the investment of a small sum, the winners at from 5o to 1 to 100 to 1 are mournful reminiscences of overlooked and lost opportunities. Foresight generally leads the turf speculator to the favorite, or second choice, but when a real long shot slips in first it is astonishing to discover from hindsight assertions how many are ready to declare they had thought of backing that particular horse, but had been swerved away from doing so by unlucky intervening counsel occurrences. Last year thirty-one horses won races at from ."0 to 1 and over in the betting. Compared with the total of races won this is a very small number, and suggests that the man who is looking for winners at such prices has to go a long way to find one. The horses, tracks at which won. dates and closing prices are here given: Dorse, Track and Date. Odds. Work-a-Day. Fair Grounds. January .3 BO-1 Huapala. Ascot Park.
