One of the most exciting incidents of the afternoon was the close finish between Bazil and Badly Ised after running lapped throughout the mile and an eighth. Bazil was tiring iu the closing strides, but lasted long euouugh to save second place by a head. The third odds-oti favorite was returned the wiener when Barrel won the fifth race in commanding style. Laudable was an easy second, while the finish between the next three horses was close, only heads separating them. The withdrawal of La Oloriu and Martha Jane toft the first race an open affair from a speculative standpoint. Lady Vashti was made a lukewarm favorite, being smartly backed just before post time, bat when it came to the running of the race, was not good enough to overtake the horses which finished in front of her. Joe Oaitens. a first starter, was prominent throughout and in a sharp last sixteenth drive, gamely outstayed the recent winner. Banthel, for second place. Frank Clancy essayed to set the pace, but tired in the closing drive. lackey Beetle Duaan was set down for three days yesterday for what the patrol judge called sharp practice. He cut across Magazine with Creston in the running of the fourth race when turning into the Stretch, causing O. Burns, on Magazine, to pull sp for an instant and. as the finish was of a sensational order, the interference might have cost his mount the race.
