RUMORED THOMAS WILL QUIT RACING. New Y"ork, January 17. — It was rumored among turfmen yesterday that E. R. Thomas would retire from the turf and that he was looking for purchasers for a number of two-year-olds secured last season. It was also stated that Thomas had declared all of his two-year-olds out of their stake engagements and had failed to make entries to the Beacon, Independence and Introductory Steeple chases, which are decided at Sheepshead Bay. Those who discussed the matter said that Thomas was piqued over the Jockey Clubs action in ruling "Boots" Durnell off the turf, inasmuch as Thomas had offered Durnell a 5,000 contract to train a big stable for him this year. Durnell, it is said, had practically accepted the offer when the Jockey Clubs edict was made known.
