] ] , ] | PRETENSION WINS THE SELLING STAKE RACE. Rapid Water Loses by Bad Ride and Millard Tries to Claim Him — Colonel Bob Defeated. Lee Angeles. Cal.. January IS. — A big rumpus occurred here after the last race today. W. D. Millard being much wrought up over what he termed the unfair way he was treated in his claim on Rapid Water in the fourth race. The official board gave out the net value to the winner as ,4.10 and it was on this that Millard filed his claim. The amount should have been .,470 and was subse-luently posted as such. Presiding Jydge Hamilton decided against Millard when the clerical error was reported to him, giving as his reason that the claim could not be valued on .in error. The decision was hotly discussed by horsemen after the races, some thinking that Millard was within his rights. Dick Williams jujnped into the selling race war loday. miming up Phil Igoc. which formerly belonged to him. from ,$."itM» to MM and getting him. T. 11. Williams will ship a string of ten horses here on January 2ti from Oakland. Jockey Walter Miller will come with them and probably ride here for three weeks. Doe Kowell will also come with the horses. Izzy Hamtuersehlag. who set the prices at the metropolitan tracks last year, arrived today from New Orleans and will remain the rest of the season. The card was one of the best of the meeting and was witnessed by a big crowd. Oue of the surprises of the afternoon, came with the running of the second race, when Rosegal defeated Colonel Bob. the odds-on favorite, by i head, showing the way throughout. Taylor trailed the leader with his mount until reaching ihe stretch, and just failed to get up in a weak finish. Burns clearly outriding him iu the closing strides. Modena won the juvenile race in a sharp drive from the choices. Frank Clancy and Marion Delorme. Rapid Water met defeat iu the tianlena Selliug Stakes, through the bungling ride given him by E. Dngaii. who. notwithstanding his three days suspension, is allowed to ride for his contract employer. Rapid Water was practically left flat-footed and met with interference at critical moments, which cost him the race. Pretension was an easy winner over binge S. Davis, which in turn finished a 1 half length in front of the favorite.
