Lee Rose Continues His Victorious Career — Burleigh Reverses Results with St. Francis-Judge Nelson Takes a Race. Oakland. C.tl.. January is. — Barney Schroiliers grand stallion Deutsehland performed an unique feat in the history tif racing anywhere, for an old horse that has done stud service at at least two seasons, when he vanquished a brilliant race horse at the height of his i owers like Montgomery iu Ihe Lissak Handicap today. Montgomery had been scut up from Arcadia specially prepared for the Lissak Handicap and arrived only in titue to lie unloaded from the car and saddled for the race. Experts regarded a victory for Hildreths great four-year-old as a foregone conclusion and the ring held him at almost prohibitive odds. Keogh, after making the running and going very wide on the last turn with Deutsehland. ran his horse into a collision with Montgomery as the latter ranged alongside in the stretch, throwing him completely off his stride and afterward effectually prevented the Pessara foutf year-old from passing Deutsehland by pulling over ou him repeatedly. The 10.000 spectators present joined in a tremendous demonstration wlieu the famous Schreiber colors showed in front in the last stride. There was a mo ment of anxiety and suspense when the jockeys weighed in. as both Keogh and Miller were questioned by the stewards. Nothing developed, however, and the placing* were officially confirmed without delay. It is said that Keogh leg-locked Miller all through the last furlong. Many of the spectators disagreed with the judges placing in the fifth race, and thought that Margaret Randolph had won by a good head from Beechwood. The backers of tho Hawkins hlly were very unlucky to have lost, as lleatinrton, the jockey, had the race won ■ six- teenth out. but.went to sleep and allowed Miller to catch the judges eye with BeechW"od. Despite the wet weather, one of the biggest crowds of the season journeyed to the course. Thirty-eight bookmakers transacted the ring business.
