KENTUCKY TRAINING AND BREEDING GOSSIP. Astley Cooper Named for Noted English Surgeon — Two Foals by Rock Sand at Nursory Stud. Lexington. Ky.. F.brnary 1.". — Dr. J. P. Neet. the master of Kindergarten Stud, that establishment la Woodford county near the town of Versailles. a her. such good thoroughbreds as Handsome. Hast ings. Handsel. Plaudit. P -ntecost. Glcuholin and Gulden lirst saw the light of day. is in a particularly happy frame of mind over the prospect thai AstTey C«ap«r, the two year-old bay coll by Don de Or© — Class Slipper, by Spendthrift, will develop into a sterling race bate -. ""This colt is a rare one and he has shown me more than any other horse I ever handled was capable of at the same age." said Dr. Ne t after attending the meeting of breeders here lasl Thurs-.lav. "I liegan breaking him in August and 1 had him in training at my farm until the latt r part of November. It was something over three months. I exercised great can- with him in these first lessons and when I was it ady to ask 1 im to run. h was ready lo run. Kvery quarter of a mile I sent him was accomplished in better than 23 J seconds. Over the same tracR the l est I was able to g t out of Plaudit and Pentecost was 23 t seconds ami Hastings and Giildeu never showed me a quarter better than 2:!] seconds. Those horses were no better formed than is this call and they were race horses. I have had several visit ins to my place to look ! im over critic illy and express much admiration for him until haQjatring as to lis breeding. 1 told them he is by Don de Oro. "Oh. 1 do not like that, they have said. Don de pro was a fast horse and a good horse, but there is that relationship to lea Tray. Hes apt to be a sulker. After working the colt as 1 have. I cannot agree with my friends and visitors. He has never displayed the slightest inclination to sulk and I am of the opinion that he never will. "A few days ago J. N. Van Orden and his trainer. Con Leighton. were at my place. They had seen the two-year-nhls I sent out to Benning to W. II. Mosby in January, and they fancied Princess Pine, the • full sister lo Fine Cut. Mr. Van Orden. offered me .50O for her. When I showed him Astley Cooper, he said: ■Why. I will give you more than twice for this colt what I offered you for the filly. I tcil the gentleman that Astley Cooper is not for sale. I have given up the practice of medicine and am going lacing with this youngster which was produced along per tain notions of my own aliont breeding. I have built high hoiK-s for him and I ain going Jo see them mat rialized or see them shattered. I have engaged trainer Carroll Re id to handle him and I know that he will develop all there is in him. I have engaged the colt in on stake at Luiisvillc. the Bashford Manor, and none at Lalonia. If he proves a success at Louisville he will be shipped it once to New York. In the east I have him so engaged that if he is a failure at Louisville 1 can get out of the stakes at a cost of about 7." and if Se is a s-ueco-js I stand a chance to earn about .". tOO net. "Ilie name I have given this colt comes of my admiration for the accomplishments of Sir Astley Cooper, the F.nglish surgeon, who still lives in niedi eal history as one of the greatest men of the profession that the world has known. I would not give that name to any save a good horse lest I iiave the imprecations of the doctors of the world ii|h u my head. This I hear is to be a year of two yeai olds. I have m-t a number of neraann these pasr two months who tell me that nearly every stable in the east contains a youngster that is considered a corker. So 1 expect that Astley Cooper is to have foes to conquer great in number and great in quality. However, it may happen that some day 1 will he phased to sell Astley Ooonet for thirty cents, hut since the delights of our lives come in great measure through anticipation. I shall feel thar I haw had much out of the ownership of this colt." To date only Ihr. of the fifty-odd mares at August Belmonts Nursery Stud have foaled and two of the baby thoroughbreds are by the celebrated Knglish race horse and stallion. Rock Sand. One of these, as was reported some time ago. is out of Fetish, the dam of Forward. Faction and Film Clam, by Rayon dOr. out of Feu Follet, by King fisher.
