ROSE QUEENS STAKE RACE DEFEATS OCEAN MAID AND RUBIA GRANDA FOR THE GUNST STAKES. Princo Brutus Scores at Long Odds — Old Bucolic Defeats Dcutschland — Exchequer Takes Another Race — Track Good. Oakland. CM.. February 15. -The first important twoyear-old fixture of the local season, the Gunst Stakes at a half mile, was won at Oakland today by the unbeaten Rose Harm by Kingston White Rose, and bred by James R. Keen. at his Castleton Stud in Kentucky. Rose Queen ran in the colors of a race follower named A. Koonigsber;;er. who had purchased the fleet filly from H. T. Griffin late Friday night for a reported price of .O00. Griffin scratched Trance and added Ocean Maid, which, after beginning slowly, dosed a tremendous gap. finally downing Ruhia Gran. la for second honors in the last stride. The winner was particularly well served throughout the running and may have been lucky to win. although the race was won in the phenomenally fast time of 4.N seconds over a track that was far from fast. Thomas H. Williams entry. Ruhia Graiula. which was a strong second choice, outpaced the favorite to the turn where she baited, forcing hat jockey. Walter Miller, to pull the filly almost to a standstill to keep her from bolting the comae, and it was only in the final sixteenth that she got down to her work and despite losing a half dozen lengths, finished as fast as the winner and was only nosd out of second place by Ocean Maid. Deutschbind. finished a close second after getting away nearly. The erratic Botanist, his first start on the local course and ridden by Miller, got away lio eIessly last and cut no figure in the running. The Ilayiuun horse started a post favorite and carried the wagers of the entire contingent. Todays half-holiday card was of more than average excellence, which, combined with oxquisitelv tieautifiil and balmy weather, contributed to attract fully 12.HK turf devotees to the race course. Only two favorites were successful, but the public profited largely on their ring operations despite this, netting good prices against Prince Brutus. Janet a and Exchequer, when all three should have been favorites in the betting. Bedwell has sold his contract on jockev Rice to I. II. Miller. T. II. Williams said yesterday that despite the engagement of Jockey Gilbert to do his lightweight riding, his present contract with jockey Walter Miller, which will expire November next, will be re nnnrnd providing the l« y desires it. Barney Schreiber has been ailing the past tnaj days ami decided to withdraw from liookiug for a few days.
