SMILEY CORBETTS TUMBLE. BIG COLT FALLS ON FIRST TURN AND BRINGS WOE TO MANY. Rosevale Wins the Two-Year-Old Race Like a Crack Filly— C. T. Henshall Buys the Fast Sprinter Gemmell. Oakland. Cal.. March 10. — The plunging contingent lost a fortune in wagers when Smiley Cor-bett fell right after the start and was eliminated as a contender in the sixth race at Oakland today. William Caliill, the owner of the gigantic Todding-ton three-year-old. was supremely confident of his colts ability to win in 1 :3S flat for the mile, if it was necessary to run that fast, but as the opposition was very moderate. Caliill expressed the opinion that Smiley Corbetts only chance of losing was to fall down, which is exactly what happened. After the favorite, Sevenfull. in the opening raiv, had been favored, with a flying start and materl-illy heli ed to a victory thereby, the public choices in the other live races. Ocean Queen. J. R. Laugh -rey, Belfe of Iriuois. Mike Jordan and Smiley Corbett. lieeame sufferers by faulty starting, which in at least three instances. J. R. I.aughrey. Mike Jordan and Smiley Corliett, affected the result. Walter Miller, who rode the last named, failed to get away and with an inside position and a very fast horse under him, found himself critically and even dangerously placed. It was imperatively necessary that he should get through on the first turn and, in an effort to do so. horse and rider went down. It was a miraculous escape for both. In the juvenile race Dr. H. E. Rowell uncovered positively the best two-year-old filly yet shown here, in Thomas H. Williams Rosevale. by Eddie Jones-Sweet Rose. She won at long odds unbacked. Midget Jockey A. Walshs ride on Brookleaf in the last race was a marvelous display of horsemanship for so youug a kid, and einphasifed the growing local impression that this is a coming jockey champion. Charles T. Henshall has just acquired the fast sprinter. Gemmell, and will campaign the crack horse in stakes on the southern California track in future. Gemmell. which is probably the fastest sprinter in California, will be shipped to Santa Anita this week. W. Kelly was lined 5 by the starter for niisbe-1 havior at the post. It is said Uie Satifa Anita meeting will be ex-, tended to May.
