NEW YORK TRACKS SCENES OF ACTIVITY All Thronged with Thoroughbreds of High Degree in Training for Racing Xew York April 0 Trainers jockeys and exer ¬ cise boys are now in the thick of preparations for the racing season which opens at the Queens County course next Wednesday Gravesend Sheepshead Bay and Belmont Park are the three Long Island tracks where the greatest activity is found Up ward of 1000 horses are quartered at these three tracks and thc morning hours find many owners trainers workwatchers and others on the track trackGravesend Gravesend is the busiest track of all and at present the fastest Here the big string of Burlew ONeill is quartered which has been augmented by the addition of the steeplechase stable belonging to Thomas Hitchcock Jr including California King Judge Post Judge OGIn Bayonet and Algelone Fred Burlew is giving Chapultepcc and Angelus careful preparation for the Carter Handicap and horsemen who have seen the pair on the track are beginning to fancy their chances to win the lirst big event of the season seasonTrainers Trainers T Welsh Frank Weir and F M Taylor are other masters of big establishments who are daily utilizing the Gravesend track in getting their charges ready to appear under colors colorsAt At Belmont Park the steeplechasers command tin most attention of the casual visitor Willitm Garth has twentyfour of the P J Rainey horses here They are being worked on the schooling track just beyond the main track which superintendent Gor ¬ man has flagged and jumps have been made similar to those of the regular course Another big string of jumpers is that in charge of Silas Viitch The Bonniebrook Stable and Courtland II Smith are also located here as well a1 the F Ambrose Clark stable in charge of trainer Callahan CallahanJ J Howard Lewis is expected at the track tomor ¬ row with the Joseph E Wldener stable stableThe The veteran trainer II Colston has the largest number of thoroughbreds at Belmont Park with the twentyfour which Chhm Forsythe will race on the metropolitan tracks this season T J Ilealey is next with twentythree which he is training for R T Wilson Jr John Whalen has thirteen which he is handling for August Belmont chairman of the Jockey Club Smaller stables here are those of Edward Nash R W Coble and Edward Regan ReganJames James R Kcene is a frequent visitor at his sta ¬ bles at Sheepshead Bay where his horses are the wonder and delight of all the visitors James Rowo is giving all the horses in his charge easy tasks and only two Restigouche and Gretna Green which may start in the Carter have been asked to show any speed speedE E R Bradley and David Gideon were both at Sheepshead Bay yesterday and II K Knapp came over from the city to look over the horses in the Oneck Stable and was pleased with their condition conditionJockey Jockey Xotter is one of the recent arrivals from Xew Orleans who believes that Jack Atkin will be returned the winner of the Carter Handicap Notter was exercising the iron sprinter before he left Xew Orleans and says the Schreiber horse never was better than now nowAll All of the improvements at Sheepshead Bay have been completed and the visitor has ditlicnlty in find ¬ ing any familiar features of his favorite track of last season The top soil has been put on the new track and it is now complete in every detail but little or no work has been done over the new course as most of the trainers prefer the yearling track
