INTERESTING RACES RUN AT WASHINGTON Swayback Billie Hibbs Takes the First Race Leav ¬ ing of Clements at Post Arouses Criticism Washington D C April 9 The card today which called for six races with large entries and more than usual promise of good contests was con ¬ siderably reduced in size and attractiveness by the withdrawal of some of the most promising horses named Thirteen were listed to start in the handicap which opened the program but only six went to the post and of fliese Smoker was selected as the most probable winner and accordingly given the support of both talent and public The Hitchcock candi ¬ date had the advantage of W Shaw In the saddle but ran another of his disappointing races and was never a contender at any time during the race David Dunlops swayback Billie Hibbs won all the way with Sugar Pine which won the first race of the present meeting at a long price second a half length in front of The Wrestler WrestlerOnly Only two favorites were returned winners this afternoon and Takahirn the Madden colt which took the second race was the first first choice to score He again demonstrated his superiority by establishing a long lead in the first furlong and spreadeagling his opponents to tlie end Elizabeth Sweeney a recent winner finished second and Helen Hills easily defeated Hawkwing for third place placeJavotte Javotte was the only one to decline the issue in the third race and of those starting Banyan was most fancied The running of the race resulted in a big surprise as Gilvedear showing sudden improvement led throughout Banyah tired fast in the stretch drive and barely saved second place from the game finishing Azure Maid MaidThe The fourth was probably more spirited from a speculative standpoint than any race of the meet J ing Edgcly was the first to engage public favor and large commissions were placed with the i eram bulators on the Gallagher horse and for a while he was supported to the exclusion of the others Then a rumor of fast trials by The Clown which was making his lirst start of the year was widely circulated causing the price on Edgely to sharply recede but notwithstanding the support given The Clown his price also went up Delphic and Kemp ton also came in for considerable backing before post time and the wise ones were bewildered The Clown rushed into the lead right after the start and led to the stretch closely followed by Edgely where the latter wore the pacemaker down to win In the last stride the race apparently being de ¬ cided by the respective riding of McFaddcn and McCahvy of which the former was the more per ¬ sistent sistentThe The leaving of Clements at the post in the fifth race provoked considerable criticism on the part of the spectators for the reason that Ivanhoe had the most active support just before post time Jockey McCarthy who had the mount on Clements ex ¬ plained to the judges that the horse would not break and his statement was substantiated by patrol judge Homan HomanIt It is early in the year to ask a threeyearold to run two races in one day but Giles today was a starter in the first race in which he finished last and was sent to the post again in the closing race which won by a head from Park Row RowThe The turf folks here were given a mild scare to ¬ day when the special committee to which was re ¬ ferred the Sims bill in the senate reported it to the main committee favorably but there is no like ¬ lihood of it being taken up for final action during the present meeting anil the opinions of those well advised differ as to the final disposition of the matter by the senate senateSixtyfour Sixtyfour layers were on the lawn today
