GOVERNOR HUGHES STICKS BY HIS GUNS Still Insists New York Senate Must Pass Measures to Abolish Track Betting Xew YorkApril 9 Following the defeat of the AgnewHart bill repealing the PercyGray law by a tie vote in the senate at Albany yesterday Gover ¬ nor Hughes sent another special message to the legislature today reiterating among other sugges ¬ tions his belief as expressed in his first message last January that the PercyGray law violates the state constitution with regard to betting on race tracks tracksSenator Senator Raines the republican leader moved to table that portion of the message relating to the AgiiewHart bills Senators Grady and McCarren made speeches accusing the governor of dictating to the senate senateHorsemen Horsemen here believe that the vote yesterday ef ¬ fectually disposes of any adverse legislation being enacted at the present session of the legislature not ¬ withstanding the fact that the bills are still subject to further action on special order orderLeading Leading turfmen claim that so many improvements will be inaugurated in the conducting of racing in this state that little danger will arise in the future of legislation hostile to the sport sportJames James R Keene vicechairman of the Jockey Club when seen today said I am certainly much pleased like everyone else interested in racing that the bill has been defeated It looks now as If we have a clear field for a brilliant racing season I hope and believe that the Jockey Club will be able to make so many Improvements in the sport that enemies of racing will in the future find much less to object to toMr Mr Keene probably jnore than any other citizen of New York was vitally Interested in a financial way In the preservation of racing In this state as hejs the owner of the largest number of noted thoroughbreds In tno country
