FINISH OF MEETING NEAR NEXT TO THE LAST DAY AT WASHINGTON MARKED BY GOOD RACING Sir Woostcr Takes the Steeplechase Easily The TheWrestler Wrestler Defeats Workman in a Close Fin ish Ragman Wins from Obdurate Washington D C April 13 While the card offered by the Washington Jockey Club this after ¬ noon did not contain a stake feature it possessed sufficient prospects on paper to bring a big Monday crowd to the track The weather conditions and a fast track for the flrst time in nearly a week made the afternoon an ideal one for racing Only two flrst choices Pnnlqnc in the third race and Sir Wooster in the steeplechase ucceeded in win ¬ ning their respective races but the finishes in most of the six races were close and exciting Two favorites Obdurate and Banker only lost through the incompetence of their riders McCarthy and Brussel BrusselThe The Chelsea Stable furnished another winner to ¬ day when trainer Preston Burch saddled The Wrestler for the first race The winner rushed into the lead right after the start and maintained it to the finish but was put to a hard drive in the clos ¬ ing strides to withstand the challenge of Workman The latter off none too well closed an immense gap in the last half and would have won in a few more strides stridesD D McCarthy who was the bright Vtar among the riders here during the first few days of the meeting and who continued in fair form until recently an pcarjs to have completely lost bis head His ride on Obdurate the favorite in the second race was his poorest exhibition of the meeting and a stable boy could have done better lie hail the mount on a filly which was considered to be much the best and John E Madden confidently backed his starter and also advised his friends to do so Obdurate followed Ragman closely almost from the start the pacemaker running on the inside while McCarthy took Obdurate to the outside In the stretch run Fairbrother rode Ragman with all the energy he possessed while McCarthy practically sat still and lost first place by a head Helen Hills which fin ¬ ished third ran a good race and was easily best of the others othersMcCarthys McCarthys ride on Pani iue in the next race was lii striking contrast to his effort on Obdurate Hold ¬ ing his mount under restraint to the stretch he opened a big lead and won by six lengths without fully extending Panique GraCe Cameron which was withdrawn from the first race to start in the third set the early pace and was the nearest contender on the winner throughout throughoutSir Sir Wooster experienced little trouble in taking the steeplechase which was fourth on the program and won in a canter Masnada held him in for a mile and a half and then overhauled Bloodstone The latter was making his first start through the fitId and fencing well showed much promise of becoming a good one oneAlloy Alloy and Trey of Spades essayed to set the pace In the fifth race but retired in the stretch Kemp ton was in close pursuit of the loaders from the start and had a big lead midway of the stretch but was forced to do his best at the end to win from Azure Maid The Shaughraun made up an im ¬ mense amount of ground and finished a fast going third thirdBrussel Brussel who had the mount on Banker the receding favorite in the closing race thought Um ¬ brella would quit after going a mile and also under ¬ estimated the ability of W Burns the younger brother of Tommy Burns who had the mount oil the Daly horse Through overcoiifldencc Brussel was content to trail the leaders to the stretch where he seat his mount to the front but Banker tired In the last stride and was nosed out by the winner Banker was much the best and would have won had Brussel drawn his whip in the stretch run runJohn John B Madden sold Obdurate after her race to D li Holden of Baltimore for 1500 Her new owner will race her at the Pimlico meeting
