SEATTLE RACING HAS BEEN CLEANSED Many Objectionable Features Abolished by the Man ¬ agement News of Horses and Horsemen Seattle Wash Juno 25 The management of the King County Fair Association under whose auspices the seventh annual summer meeting at The Meadows was successfully inaugurated hist Saturday has this season made several important concessions to public sentiment in connection with the carrying on of its racing enterprise These concessions it Is thought will exercise a beneficent effect In allaying the in ¬ cipient opposition to a continuation of the sport which last year manifested itself and which other ¬ wise might have resulted in legislative enactment against racing at the biennial session of the Wash ¬ ington legislature lit WOO There is now less fear of hostile legislation and the general opinion Is that racing will continue to nourish in this state indefi ¬ nitely nitelyThe The concessions referred to include the suppression of the public bar at the race track the elimination of the pool boys who formerly served the female patrons of the track in getting bets down curtail ¬ ment of the promiscuous distribution of badges to women vigorous enforcement of the rule against touting and general discouragement of sensational methods in any connection connectionDespite Despite the financial depression from which So attic Is suffering in common with the rest of the country the patronage accorded the sport has so far been beyond expectation and the pros ¬ pects are that the meeting of IflOS will excel all of its predecessors in every respect Owing to the general fear that financial conditions might affect the attendance and volume of speculation only sevcnteen books were in operation at the opening cutin where over twenty were expected but it is safe to predict that within the next fortnight the ranks of the layers will be increased to twentyfive and probably thirty Many Califrnia layers who had costly experiences in the opening days of the meeting at The Meadows one year ago are on the ground but will not cut in until such time as the local form of the horses has been somewhat esta ¬ blished The play has been exceedingly encouraging so far Here Is the list of the bookmakers who cut in on opening day Joe Harlan Roy Offutt Ambrose Dunn Martin Co Argyle Co Phil Uammil Harry Froelich Nelson Jones W R Engstrom Edwin T Fryer A F Andrews George Lendon Johnnie Lewis and J Jones JonesJohnny Johnny Lyons and English Bill Jackman are among the best known of the bookmakers who are on the ground awaiting developments Lyons reached here from a vacation trip to his old home In Missouri just in time for the opening and Jackman having abandoned his plans for a New York campaign on account of the uncertainty following the enactment of the IlartAgnew bills also got in from California on opening day The latter will begin booking at The Meadows on the Fourth of July he announces announcesEd Ed Soule who was injured by the upsetting oC his automobile while touring here from Sail Fran ¬ cisco is expected within a few days and will hang up his slate Immediately upon his arrival Johnny Coleman will be here soon after the butchers picnic at Emeryville lor which he was awarded the bet ¬ ting privilege Bill Moseley another California bookmaker is on the way north and it is reported that Little Henry Freyslnghausen who went to New York at the close of the Oakland meeting will return to the coast to operate There are many idle bookmakers clerks here who will welcome additions to the ring ringSome Some COO horses are now quartered at The Mead ¬ ows and only a few more are expected The addi ¬ tions will come principally from Denver and New York Al Koenigsbergs Dorado was the only horse to succumb to the effects of the long shipment here and there is virtually no sickness in any of the stables Burleigh Bye Bye II Peter Sterling Paj aroita and Fireball contracted fever en route but all are well on the road to complete recovery and no permanent ill effects are anticipated H A Cot ¬ tons filly Emily if recently purchased from Bar ¬ ney Schreiber jumped the track fence while belug exercised a day or two ago and broke her neck neckStarter Starter Dwyer has been getting good results at the barrier and has made a decided hit with the local racegoers He started the season by putting Belie Kiniiey Preen Blondy Prince Brutus St Elmwood San Olmo Edwin T Fryer Early Tide and Bonaventuro on the schooling list Most of these horses are notoriously bad actors butthe few of them that have so far started after having been schooled to J3wycrs satisfaction have shown dis tinct improvement J R Jeffery
