LATONIA MEETING CLOSES EFFORTS OF HORSEMEN TO PROVIDE FOR CON TINUING THE SPORT PROVE UNAVAILING Much Indignation Over the Action of the Club Offi ¬ cials Last Day sHacing Attractive Olambala To Be Sent East Cincinnati 0 July 7 Latonia racing aftei lasting thirtyone days and with ten more days allotted liy the Kentucky Racing Commission came to a sudden termination today after an abrupt announcement of the jockey clubs directors o a discontinuance claiming that to prolong the meet ¬ ing here would entail additional losses Tula decision of the club came as a surprise to the mat jority of the horsemen who Immediately set about devising means and plans to continue They at once began a number of i hformal conferences and by race time a general rumor was current thatthey would be successful In leasing the track and running the meeting up to July 18 18At At the conferences of the horsemen It was de ¬ cided to go along with the meeting If they could secure a lease of the track from the management The horsemen who constituted themselves as head of affairs were William Gerst T l Hayes and George Holle Thir Intention was to maintain thn meeting on the following lines That current run ¬ ning expenses were to be deducted from the gate receipts mutuel and auction pool percentages the remainder to go to one general pool and be pro ¬ rated as purse ntoney for six daily races The winners were to receive seven tyflve per cent sec ¬ onds fifteen and t hlrds ten The above three gen ¬ tlemen represent ng the horsemen held a confer ¬ ence In the afternoon with the club management but met with no success on account of certain con ¬ ditions that could not be overcome The principal ones were that tbie deputation refused to furnish a boud that would bsolve the association from losses and also to insur horsemen the payment of purscs and the liquidation of general expenses As these conditions could i lot be acceded to negotiations fell through and the closing race witnessed the shutdowp of this plant for its term of spring and summer racing and possibly for the present year The yearThe possible action of the Kentucky Racing Com ¬ mission on the pr imature and unexpected close of the meeting can only be conjectured Much feeling was manifested both among horsemen and some of the racegoers becaufie the meeting had been ended with ¬ out notice This was intensified by the fact that some ten days igo when a reduction in purses had been allowed bf the Racing Commission announce ¬ ment had been made by the management that the meeting would go on and run out the full fortyone days permitted by the commission It was a gener ¬ ally expressed view that In any event and trader the worst of circumstances the meeting after announce ¬ ment of fts cl ose should have been continued to the end of the wiet in order to give turfmen a breath ¬ ing spell in which to make plans for the future The days racing developed nothing sensational An evenly ba lanced card provided fair entertainment for a good cfowd The speculation on the different races was of large Tolurae and as wellbacked horses were the contenders at the finishes the majority of racegoers hid a profitable afternoon afternoonThe The showing of Olambala J M Greeners prom ¬ ising tvoy arold was a sterling one and he looms up as a prospective strong contender for honors among the fashionable youngsters now running in the cast as he will be shipped there in the near future to measure strides with some of the cracks in undecided stakes of that section Jockey sectionJockey V Powers carried off the riding honors piloting tiiree of the afternoons winners In addi ¬ tion to having the mount on Olambala he was astride Mirth and Lady Esther The latter gained the easiest victory of the day when she beat a good band of Celling platers in the closing race Starter raceStarter Iloltmans efforts in the fifth race met witli disapproval from many who had bet well on The Thorn as well as on the winner Lady Baldur and oiio or two others De Oro one of the starters in this irace is a notoriously bad actor and evidently it was Iloltmans effort to get the erratic horse away that made a bad looking sendoff sendoffCarroll Carroll Reid and W A Smith are contemplating shipping to Seattle as soon as they can make up a carload of horses horsesEd Ed Alveys string will be shipped to Windsor to bo raced there for the remainder of that meeting after ErieJ which they will go to Fort Erie J C Milam will ship his horses back to Lexing ¬ ton thereMost to be turned out until racing resumes there Most of the owners now here will remain for several futureThe days to formulate plans for the future The investigation started yesterday by Judge Price relative to the Inconsistent running of some of the horses from P T Chinus stable resulted In nothing The stable and jockey Warren were fully exonerated no evidence tending to show either had been guilty of fraudulent practices being adduced
