STATUS OF NEW YORK BETTING CASES Tor the first time in a number of years a grand jury has been sworn in hi Kings County to serve during July and August Acting District Attorney KIder had announced last Friday that a grand jury would bo called this week and that he would take the cases of the men arrested at the race tracks before that body bodyMelville Melville Collins who was discharged on a writ of habeas corpus by Justice BiscbofT of the Supreme Court last week will be called before the grand jury and Mr Elder will attempt to have him in ¬ dicted for accepting money on u wager made on a horse race raceThis This is the first time in legal history that a man who has been discharged by the court on habeas corpus proceedings has been called a second time to face the court on the same offense without any change in the evidence But Mr Elder declared last week he would have Collins indicted and he ex ¬ pects to do so soMr Mr Elder also announced last Friday that be would endeavor to secure the indictment of Coney Island Jockey Club officials for furnishing informa ¬ tion to bookmakers and permitting them to do busi ¬ ness in the race track enclosure in violation of the law The new law makes it a violation to fur iiish any place for this purpose purposeIn In the meantime the injunction proceeding is pend ¬ ing before Justice Blanchard of the Supreme Court In New York It is hardly likely that the Kings County grand jury will do anything before this decision is handed down It is a pivotal matter and upon it rests much of the further action of Mr Elder
