THE MAN STOOD BY THE BOYS IDEAL Old China by Avlngton Derby China which at 10 to 1 won the 5000 Northumberland Plate at Newcastle June 25 cost 750 as a yearling She be ¬ longs to Mr Angus Bell a Scotsman and Is trained by James Fagan whereby hangs a tale which to those who appreciate the daily and hourly romance of the turf may be Interesting At the time that Fagan was in the heydey of his career as a jockey Angus Bell was a small boy at school For some reason or other young Bell made Fagan his hero as schoolboys do make heroes and whenever Fagan rode in a big race Bells shilling was invested on his mount If ever I have any money I shall buy some race horses and Fagan shall ride them was the vow taken by the schoolboy The boy grew into a man went to Australia made money and returned to England EnglandFagan Fagan by that lime had given up riding but had set lip as a trainer which from the point of view of Mr Bell was the same thing He told Fagan he wanted to buy some race horses and Fagan sug ¬ gested yearlings One of two bought was Old China
