RENTON HANDICAP PROVES UNSATISFACTORY Seattle Wash July 22 The expectation that the Renton Handicap in which four Derby candidates competed today would furnish a good line on tlis probable outcome of the Derby itself was not real ¬ ized First Peep won todays handicap in tracK record time with Boggs and Stanley Fay two of the Derby candidates second and third and Glorio ond Early Tide two other Derby aspirants unplaced The contest was so far from being a true run affair however as to furnish absolutely no reliable index of the relative merits of the Derby horses There was a great deal of crowding and lamming throughout the race with Glorio Stanley Fay and ISoggs the principal sufferers Early Tide had no mishaps and on the outcome of the race appears to have little chance in Saturdays contest Bogcs encountered interference ou the first turn but was able to overcome It and make a respectable showing Stanley Fay was repeatedly knocked back in the middle half and seemed to lack his usual snap when clear sailing presented itself In the stretch Glorio was knocked back to last position on the backstretch and was herded until there was no chance of finishing in the money He finished gamely and made up several lengths in tlie final furlong The result of the race leaves the Derby situation in a condition that will encourage the starting of a larger field than was expected expectedDareington Dareington was worked for a race tonight as an outcome pf todays handicap and will be a starter Anna May was the only favorite to win today four second choices and a third choice accounting for the rest of the card Smiley Corbett William Csi liflls gigantic sprinter furnished the bitterest dis ¬ appointment of the day The colt ran as if still short as In his previous start startFrank Frank Doss trainer of Varietes bid Harry Scott up from 000 to 900 but failed to get the horse In retaliation William Walker claimed Varietes for 5JSpl 5JSplAs As an outcome of the unprofitable business that the layers have been transacting three books dropped out at todays cutin Edwin T Fryer John Hum brecht and Ed Hntchinson Fryer Is reported to be about 10000 loser on tlie season
