GOV HUGHES AFTER SHERIFF BRADLEY Saratoga N Y August 11 Governor Hughes bus summoned Sheriff John Bradley Jr of Sura toga county to appear before him in the executive chamber next Monday afternoon to show cause why he should not be removed from office for permitting bookmakers to ply their vocation both on and off the track at Saratoga and especially in the Sara ¬ toga hotels hotelsSheriff Sheriff Bradleys removal is asked on charges filed by mail with Governor Hughes by Walter Laidlaw as chairman of the antirace track gamb ¬ ling campaign committee with headquarters in New York City Mr Laldlaws letter to Governor Hughes about the racing charges is dated New York and con ¬ tains chargesThat the following charges That Bradley has permitted chapter 0 of the penal code and particularly section 351 of the penal code to bo violated on the race track main ¬ tained by the Saratoga Association although his attention has been specifically drawn thereto theretoThat That he has permitted his deputies to allow and connive at violations of the said laws lawsThat That he has permitted iKwkmakers to carry on their business at Saratoga during the racing season That seasonThat he has permitted bookmakers to employ agents for soliciting business and permitted them openly solicitationThat to cany on such solicitation That he has allowed bookmakers to record wagers on races about to be run runThat That he has allowed bookmaklng to go on in the hotels of Saratoga as well as on the race tracks tracksThat That his failure to make a single arrest during the nine days of racing already held while the grandstand and field have been filled with book ¬ makers prosecuting their business has been sub vertlve of the purposes of the penal code codeSheriff Sheriff Bradley said he was prepared to fight the proceedings brought against him He believes he has not iviolated the law and he will see his counsel Senator Brackett preparatory to fighting
