AMOS TURNEYS SHARP PUNISHMENT PUNISHMENTFort Fort Erie Horsemen Consider It Was Too Severe Under the Circumstances Buffalo N Y August 11 The ruling of Judges Murphy and Nelson at Fort Erie on Saturday deny ¬ ing 16 Amos Turney the privileges of the track has caused more discussion among horsemen than any other official decision of the year In the Niagara Stakes run Saturday August 1 Mr Turneys Theo Cook was held at the post by one of the as ¬ sistant starters The colt got away poorly L A Ollas Marse Abe leading all the way and ylnuIng nasilv Mr Turney made assertions that his colt which was third had been held purposely in order to let Marse Abe win Opportunity was offered Mr Turney to substantiate his charges which he failed to do Mr Turney Is one of the oldest best known and most respected turfmen in the country He owns a breeding farm near Frankfort Ky where he and bin brother have a choice band of broodmares and somfi three or four stallions including Captain Slgsbee a good handicap horse that formerly raced successfully in Turney Bros colors In view of Mr Turneys high standing as a turfman horse ¬ men here appear to be generally of the opinion that a tine might properly have covered the offense com comTurfmen Turfmen frequently in the heat of temper give expressions to opinions as to the running of races tvliereas in cooler moments they would have accepted whatever accidents of the running might have hap ¬ pened with equanimity August Belmont James R Kceue the late John Hunter Phil Dwyer Edward Corrigan Pat Dunne S C Hildreth in fact one might almost say all oldtime prominent turfmen have on occasion lost their tempers and verbal judg judgin in a period of twentyfive years Turney Bros have bred owned and raced many Kood horses Their stable in previous years has always been a desirable acquisition at any race meeting They haye a good lot here the best beinj Martin Doyle Thco Cook and a maiden twoyearold filly that is highly thought of The Turney stable will be shipped to Montreal as tlm local ruling will not apply at any other track limn Fort Krie
