CALIFORNIA RACING NEWS AND GOSSIP GOSSIPKccnc Kccnc Stable Sends Two Horses to Japan Oakland Track Softened Trotters String San Francisco Cal September 22 G H Keene arrived yesterday from Seattle where he remained for several days following the shipment of bis stable to Emeryville in order to superintendent the ship ¬ ment of Triumphant and Tonic to his brother Jack in Japan William Head the foreman who left the employ of the Keenes last season to engage in train ¬ ing on his own account has rejoined the Keene stable and will be G II Kcenes righthand man during the absence of Jack Keene abroad The Keene horses already here include Incentive On Parole lions Ilravouro Nagazam Exchequer Rabe ¬ lais Novgorod Prince Nap 15oggs and Roiilori The stable will bo Immediately augmented by the addi ¬ tion of Red Leaf Mansard Clamor Gromobol Con ¬ federate Chitterlings and a twoyearold colt by Gold Heels that has never started These horses have been turned out for the summer at Brentwood Stock Farm and will be forthwith taken up for training William Read who inspected them at Brentwood a few days ago declares that they are all In grand shape so far as physical appearances go Red Leaf usually lean and scrawny especially has taken on so much flesh that Read fears the season will be well advanced before she can be trained down to racing condition conditionWilliam William Cabills Vqladay and all the other horses that summered at Brentwood with tlie single ex ¬ ception of Arkllrta looked to be Jn splendid shape Arklirta appeared to be very lame In his paddock and the probabilities are that he will not train trainThe The only work that will be done upon the main track at Emeryville this season will be the applica ¬ tion of a new top dressing of loam to the entire conrso This work is now being done Superintend ¬ ent Grant was fortunate in obtaining loam of sur ¬ passing litness for the purpose and believes that the dressing will have the effect of making the course faster than ever besides providing it with a cushion that will be beneficial to the underpinning of Un ¬ horses There was considerable complaint last sea ¬ son among horse owners on the score of the hardness of the track at Emeryville that probably will find no oxcuse for recurrence this season The string which Edward Trotter will campaign here Ibis winter will consist only of Peter Sterling Miss Mazzonl and Billy 1ullman These horses are still at Seattle but will leave the north shortly Peter Sterling lias been a great disappointment since his arrival on the coast Jast fall having apparently completely trained off after one or two good races in the early part of last season Trotter attempted to get him ready for the twomile stake at Seattle but was unable to do so The horse appears to be a nonimulder and Trotter will try to pick up a purse or two with him before the wet weather times at Emeryville Miss Mazzoni was taken out of i selling race by Trotter at Seattle and appears t be a useful filly in auy sort of going goingJ J R Jeffery
