BOOKMAKERS AT OAKLAND. San Francisco. Cal., November 5. There is considerable speculation as to the probable number of books that will be in line on opening day at Emeryville. Last year twenty-nine books cut in on opening day. wliicb. represented the record for the beginning of any California season. From tliat figure the count steadily mounted until the record-breaking total of forty-two was reached when the season was at its height. It is considered likely that the showing on opening day this season will not vary much from the corresponding occasion one year ago. and there will be some surprise should more than thirty layers hang up their slates as a starter. Many layers who will break into the game later on are planning to get a line on the form of the horses before cutting In, and will allow a week or two to go b3 before they venture to chalk up any odds.
