DEMOCRATS VOTED FOR HUGHES. Governor Hughes re-election by a plurality so J small in comparison with that of Mr. Taft in this state is significantof the resentment of a great body of voters caused by his imperious insistence upon the anti-betting legislation and a belief that he would favor enactment of further laws designed to restrict personal liberty. But for Mr. Tafts tidal wave it is doubtful whether Mr. Hughes would have been elected. At the same time the vote in New York City regarded as the stronghold of the "personal liberty" advocates shows that many democrats voted for him and presumably approved of his course.
