NOTES OF THE TURF. The four days race meeting conducted by The Waco Fair Association at Waco. Texas, last week was a success in every way. The attendance was large and the racing produced some close and exciting finishes. Jackson Smith, late of the Panama Canal Coin-mission, was a visitor at Latonia track yesterday. Mr. Smith is best known to the race-goers of the west as the presiding judge at -the Newport, Ky.. track in its palmy days. AVhen W. W. Darden disposed of his horses recently he retained the old mare. Miss Crawford, which was shipped to Tennessee and will be put Iu the stud next- spring. Darden has a half-dozen home-bred, two-year-olds which ihe will train next season. "A visit to the Brighton Beaeh race track a few days ago," says the New York Sun. "disclosed the fact that this famous old race course is rapidly disappearing. Streets are being laid out in both directions, the infleld is rapidly tilling up. and the work of tearing down the clubhouse and steel stands has already begun." Jockey Dave Nicol is reported to have received two flattering offers to ride abroad. Nicol should meet with success on the other side as he has an excellent reputation and years of experience In the saddle. Nicol acquired fame as the rider of the great Sysonby in most of his brilliant three-year-old races and as the pilot of English Lad and other stars of the Cook stable.
