HILDRETH AS A DEER HUNTER. . The name of S. C. Hildreth figures quite prominently in the reports from the coast due to the large and highly prized stable of racers which will represent him on both California tracks during the winter. Only recently, when a large batch of Hildreths horses were expected at Santa Anita Park and the prospects of his stable being discussed. Johnny Bnllman had the following story to tell about Hii-dreth: "When he was here last season Hildreth was Invited by some friends to take a trip back in tho mountains after deer. The fact that he had never seen a wild deer in his life didnt bother Hildreth. who put over a bluff that he was the best in the business when it came to potting venison. "All went well with the party, and Hildreth was assigned to a particularly good prospect in the line of a deer run. His trusty Savage was ready for business and, after a short wait, a trim-looking buck hove in sight. "It wasnt buck fever that allowed that deer to get away. Just as he rose to his feet to get a better shot Hildreth was seen by the animal and it broke to a flying start, making the first eighth iu about 10. " Gee whiz, said Hildreth. dropping his gun and pulling out a stop watch, I never saw that baby in colors. Just wait till he starts and Ill have a big bot down. "
