NOTES OF THE TURF. II. T. Griffin has erected a barrier of his own on the training track at Oakland for the purpose of schooling his yearlings. Trainer Ham of the Gerst stable says that all the horses in his charge are rapidly rounding to form and will soon be seen to advantage. J. J. Marklein, Jr.. who for some years trained his fathers horses, has retired from racing entirely, having accepted a position on the Cincinnati lire department. T. G. Ferguson, who has been training several yearlings belonging to S. C Hildreth. has decided to retire from active participation in racing and has turned over his charges to their owner. Jockey Spencer says that one of the largest thoroughbreds he ever saw is the three-year-old colt, Minotaur, bred and raced in Germany, which is a wonderfully good sprinter up to five and a half furlongs. The five-year-old. Dr. Mack, which raced at the Beaumont meeting, was stolen from his stable last week, but was recovered later, having been found in the possession of J. W. Mallon, a valet employed at the track. Trainer Ed Whyte reports that the four-year-old. Tourenne, is in good condition and will be ready for an early campaign on the Canadian tracks next season. Whyte has under his care, besides Tourenne, three three-year-olds and two yearllnss.
