WILLIAMS SUFFERS FRACTURE OF SKULL WHEN HIS MOUNT FALLS. ; Hospital Authorities Hold Out Scant Hope of Boya Recovery Decreased Patronage Follows Programming of Poor Card. i Louisville, Ky.. September 28. An accident which was attended witli fatal results came shortly after? tin; start or the third race at Churchill Downs this afternoon, when Ball Hazard, on which R. Williams had the mount, fell. The rider was picked up with, a fractured skull and was rushed to a nearby hospital. Tin; doctors there entertain slight hopes of his recovery. Williams is under contract to Henderson and Jlogan and gave jiromise of becoming, with more experience, a good rider. He is oniy sixteen years old. In some quarters there was a disposition to fix the blame for the accident on the unwieldy field that contested the race. There waa some crowding, which may have caused the horse to stumble and eventually fall. But the mishap was probably brought about by an attempt to lunge through a gap iu the wall of horses. Quantity displaced quality this afternoon and, as a result of the offering, the Churchill Downs management had a poor gate. Speculation was light, aa the big fields of cheap racers, held out small Inducement for investment. The sport was only ordinary and enthusiasm was lacking. The best race of the afternoon was the fourth, iu which -Marline II. duplicated her clever victory of the opening day. Because of her showing in her previous start. Foursome was considered her superior, but the speedy pace that she was forced to sustain in the eafly stages to keep within striking distance of Howdy Howdy proved her undoing when the final test came and she was easily passed at the end by Martine H., Laveno awl Eurlca. Bonnie Bard, which became the property of T. Kelly yesterday at a nominal price, scored for hia new owner at the first asking when he led Alma Boy and Grenade to the finish in the fifth race.
