KENTUCKY DERBY CANDIDATES WORK FAST The Fad Goes a Mile ia 145 J Easily and Waldo the Same Distance in 150 Under Wraps Louiville Ky March IT Most sensational was the work of the Kentucky Derby candidates at Churchill Downs ycresterday for this season of the year The most startling performance was that of C C Van Meters The Fad which went a mile in 14 J This is faster time than any horse has made here since racing closed last fall He went the first eighth in 12J the quarter in 255 three eighths iu 5Si the half in r2J liveeighths in 102 threequarters in 11JJ ami seven eighths in 130 A number of trainers and horsemen who witnessed and timed the performance were of the opinion that had the halfbrother to Smart Set been strung out to the limit all the way he would have gone the mile in 142 or better Trainer Van Meter was all smiles after the workout due in no small degree to the fact that The Fad worked his trial kindly throughout and displayed no nervousness either be ¬ fore or after He likes this track beyond a doubt was the remark he made as he followed the Derby candidate to his stable Going on the track or coming from it The Fad is always accompanied bv a pony the trainer brought back with him from Mexico and the Woolsthorpe gelding seems much in love with his companion and perfectly contented as long as the little fellow is trotting or walking at his side sideTrainer Trainer Van Meter also sent Topland another Ken ¬ tucky Derby candidate a mile and the son of Or ¬ lando went the distance handily in 1 OJ His frac ¬ tional time was Eighth 1SJ quarter 2 i three eighths 40 half 53 fiveeighths 1OT4 three quarters 121S and seveneighths l3l J Topland was only cantering all the way A wayA thrill of expectancy came when It was noted that Waldo the Kentucky Derby favorite had also come on the track with ail the signs that he was to he sent a good mile The guess proved correct as the great son of Plamides circled the track under double wraps in 130 It is the first time he has even been asked to go a mile better than three minutes this season His fractional time was Eighth iH quarter 2T threeeighths 40J half 54 J five eighths lOTj threequarters 1203 and seven eighths l5i He pulled up almost to a walk at the end and left the track with his ears high in tho air and to all appearances in the best of fettle fettleRudd Rudd Varwig has reached Churchill Downs with his string from Latonia He shipped in the three yearold filly Lady Welles and a pair of two yearolds Cannon Shot and Dottle B Both are by the noted race horse Sis Shooter the latter being a bay fllly out of Glena by Free Knight and the former a chestnut gelding out of Flash of Light ¬ ning by Prince of Monaco This is the third foal of that good broodmare and Varwig thinks he never raised a better one Flash of Lightnings first foal was the highclass Lady Martha and then she dropped Lady Welles and Camion Shot in succession Varwig has at the farm now a yearling chestnut filly cut of her by Dick Welles and this mouth she dropped a bhick filly also by Dick Welles He sent her and her suckling foal this week to Lexington and will mate her this season with the Respess Englishbred horse Marathon MarathonFred Fred A Forsythe owner of one of the biggest strings here was a visitor to Churchill Downs yes ¬ terday He came to superintend the shipment here of the good race horse Dorante which lie brought in with him to trainer Colston from Fountainbluc Farm Colston will point the son of Pessura for the Suburban Handicap He did not race much last year The year before he gave a good account of himself among his victories on the big eastern tracks being such events as the Nursery Handicap and Travers Stakes and the Twin City Handicap Said Mr Forsythe I kept him at the farm until now thinking I would mate him with a few mares this spring before again putting him in training but the bulk of my mares failed to foal on time and so I abandoned that idea as the training season is going rapidly along I have Dorante in both the Suburban and Brooklyn Handicaps and I will also stake him iu some of the Saratoga events I look for him to mako a good fiveyearold and after this season I will likely retire him as I want him for a stallion I believe he will make a good sire Mr Forsythe reports three foals so far at his farm this year as follows followsBay Bay filly by Fillgrane Ella Duke DukeBay Bay colt by Oddfellow Ferrol FerrolBay Bay filly by Filigrane Maid of the Order OrderThe The firstnamed filly is a halfsister to the stake winner Duelist and the Ferrol colt is a brother to Fountainbluc and Twilight Queen QueenForsythe Forsythe has leased for this season to mate with Oddfellow from George C Graddy Daytonia Stud Versailles Ky the Ilimyar mare Indifference The cross of Oddfellow on Ilimyar mares has been suc ¬ cessful nt Foiintainblun Stud and Mr Forsythe will have five nianH by Dominos sire to mate with Oddfellow this season as besides Indifference he himself owns Ethel Thomas Ferrol Belle of St Louis and Manlahka all of which are by the great horse which made turf fame and fortune for the late Major B G Thomas I want to give Oddfellow all the chance I can this season said Mr Forsythe yesterday as the horse is now twentythree years old and you know at that age a stallion is liable at any moment to pass away though I must say the sou of Barcaldine looks as lusty and hearty this season as he did five years ago
