Son of Plaudit Makes Showing That Makes It Certain He Will Be Metropolitan Favorite. New York. Mav 10.— King James had his final for the Metropolitan in the mile and a sixteenth the I»ng Beach Handicap at Aqueduct today and the character of his race makes it well-nigh certain that he will be a hot favorite Friday. King .lames did not win. but he was ••pulled double" at Hie end to permit Favette. his stablemate. to finish first while be beat Far West, the third horse, with ridiculous ease. S. C. Hildreth had failed to iiKike Bay declaration before the race and after the running of the race be was culled into the stand by the stewards and questioned as to his reason for slopping King .lames in faor of Fayette. .On the face of it would appear that he wished to avoid a five-pounds penalty that would have been incurred by his victory. No action was taken in the matter, but it is likelv that a tine will be imposed. While ImjUi ol the llihlrelh horses greatly outclassed the Others and the race was very impressive. Fayette came out the running lane- and it is possible that he will have to be laid away for a time. It was Gay Fisher winner of the Fxcelsior. that made the pace and when he went the first three eighths in 34* and the half in MC, jockey Dugan took King James back, though the big son of Ilaudit could easily have gone to the pacemaker. The track was still slow from the rain of yesterday and the race was a very fast one considering its condition. The Long Beach Handicap was instituted in MM. and its brief history is as follows: Year. Winner. A.Wt. Jockey. Yal. Time. MM old Honesty... .4 1"2 Musgrave . ... ".Sal 1:47 P.Klt Not run this year. Hag-gins colors were In front for the first time in a long while when Sbackleton, a home-bred two-year-old, lieat a smart lot of maidens in the four-and-a-half-furlongs dash. His performance was an excellent one and suggests that he will go on to better things. The Keene two-year-olds are very sick and it is feared that Katonah. one especially well thought of. will not recover. Maskette is still coughing and she has been thrown out of training. She is the onlv one of the older horses that has been affected. Arrivals of horses from limlieo include those of August Belmont. Capt E. B. Fassatt. Barney Schreitier. H. I.. Shaw. J. A. Jones.
