CAPT. J. T. WILLIAMS GOOD HORSES, Louisville. Ky.. August 1. — Capt. J. T. Williams, in speaking of his brilliant two-year-old. Governor Gray, said: "He is not the only great two-year-old that I have trained, for CreedaMOT was some race horse himself as a two-year-old. It is a long gap between Creedmoor and Governor Grav. ■■ termer having been a two-year-old in 1875, when the inaugural race meeting was held at Churchill Downs. Dont you know that • of Asteroid was a good deal like Governor Gray. Whenever the distance lengthened out he got his horse. Vagraut had beaten him at the shorter distances as a two-year-old. but when he ran over six r-ii-kMlg11 at that age Creednioor took his measure. As a three-year-old Vagraut defeated him in the Kentucky Derby, but when it came to going two miles in the lark Stakes, Creedmoor turned the tables. I guess of all the great horses I have owned and trained, Creedmoor and Governor Bray were the heat as two-year-olds, though Hanis Horn was a good youngster, ami Proofreader was no bad two-year-old. Joe Cotton at that age was hardly as good as one of the above-named, but he improved as a three-year-old. as did Vera Cruz, another great horse 1 once owned. Old Checkmate was at his best when he had fully matured. He could not beat an ordinary hundred-dollar colt when he was a two-year-old."
