SARATOGAS BRILLIANT DAY SPA HAS MOST SUCCESSFUL AFTERNOON OF EALING IN SEVERAL YEARS. Crowd of 12.000. Representing Beauty and Fashion of Great Resort. Sees S. C. Hildrcthg Horses Win Important Stakes. Saratoga, N. Y.. August IS. — Saratoga was at its Inst today and not since the passage of the laws ajaard at betting lias a raring association in this state been graced by such a crowd as thronged Hie beautiful course. It was a crowd of fashion and beaut; and every available bit of the grandstand, lawns, clubhouse balconies and paddock was thronged with beautifully gowned women and well dressed men. There were fully 12,000 in the main enclosure, aside from a tremendous crowd in the ■rid stands. The card was the most varied that has been offered by any lacing association this season MdJ from the first race to the last on the long program the s|M rt was all that could have Ixvn wished for. The Saratoga Special ami the Travels Stakes wer- the most valuable races offered. Thev were lioth taken by S. C Hildreth. In the Saratoga Special his good colt. Novelty, beat James H. Keenes Iron .Mask, an added starter, and Hichard T. Wilson. Jr. a Nanshon. as well as several other good ones, and Dalmatian easily ran away from his opposition in the Travers Stakes. The Officers Army Service Cup brought out a brilliant military crowd and the race was a great success, though it Waa marred somewhat by the falling of May Lee with her owner. Lieut. W. .1. Scott, of the Tenth Halted States Cavalry. Lieutenant Scott was severely shaken up and it was thought best to remove him to the hospital, though after an examination at the track it was reported that no Ixmes were brakes and that he would probably l e about again within a short time. The race raa won by Maj. William M. Roberts of the M. C, L. S. A.. Fort Thomas, Ky. Another accident occurred in the race for gentlemen riders, Mr. A. Davis, riding Kentucky Beau, and Mr. K. C. Cowdiu, Jr., riding Faultless, falling. Fortunately Itoth escaped unhurt and were not even lenuiorariiy knocked out. In the Shillelah Steeplechase Bello fell at the water jump and jockey Allen suffered a Severely wreiiched shoulder. In the fifth race Tommy Wright was thrown from Diebobl. but he was promptly on bis feet and he Buffered so little inconvenience from bis spill tiiat he rode Wilton I.ackaye into second pifcee in tin last race of the day. For the running of the Travels. John Hunter, a veteran turfman, acted as one of the stewards at the request of the management. Mr. Hunter was owner of Kentucky, winner of the Travers when it had its initial running in 1S04. He was a power « n the turf for main rears and was chairman of the old board of Control that preceded the Jockey Club. Dalmatian, in winning the latest running of the Travers, only verified what was pretty well established during the meeting of the Empire City Racing Association nt Yankees, and that is that be is far and away the best three-year-old of the year. Today, under a burden of 120 pounds, he loafed along behind his opposition until almost to the stretch, whore lie came away with ease to win in band by four or live lengths from Barley tberpe, while another BUdreth starter. Hampton Court, took third money. The surprise of the race was Harley-Ihorpe, which at licxt was considered only a sprinter and he was as good as 100 to 1 in the market, with no takers. It was a foregone conclusion that Dalmatian would win the Travers. but it was not expected that Hildretb would make it a double by taking the Saratoga Special, » great sporting stake, with a colt iike Novelty. Though he was a good one at Yonkers he was not considered as being in the same lass with Iron Mask and Nausbon. and as a result he was permitted to go to the |K st at a long price. He bad some luck at the start and bad speed enough to carry Iron Mask along at a pace that hail the latter beatep at the head of the stretch. Novelty then went on to win by a length and a half. Nanshon was unlucky at the break for the reason that Butwell. who rode him. took Bp slightly. He dosed an immense gap ami would have beaten Iron Mask for second place in another stride. Aunt Jule was an easy winner of the Shillelah Steeplechase, and the manner in which she ran away from her company leaves no doubt of her belonging among the g.xxl lumpers of this vear. S. C. Hildretb was today fined 00 ami I. Dunne whs reprimanded for violation of the rules of racing. The punishment grew out of a friendly claiming of Montgomery by Mr. Dunne after he hud been beaten in his race of yesterday. Jockeys Moore ami Nolan were each suspended for five days for misbehavior at the post.
