MARTINEZ TAKES MOHAWK SELLING PLATERS PROVIDE AFTERNOON OF INTERESTING SPORT AT SARATOGA. Change in Racine Tactics Proves Efficacious in Case cf Follie Levy and She Wins Handicap Feature of Program — Patronage Still Good. Saratoga. K. Y.. The attendance was large, considering that Hi ly special attraction was the Mohawk Selling Stakes, and there wore several new arrivals from New York. Racing this season is tremendously popular with the natives themselves and it is notieealde that each day thev are out in goodly Makers. Am Mohawk went to Martinez, which raced in the colois of that veteran turfman. 1reston Kuroh. His ra • was a good one and. as he was liberally hacked, his victory was thoroughly popular. Martini!! was first choice, hut there was a tip abroad M Chief Kee. a Canadian three-year-old. that made him second choice. Cherryola was the one to cut out all the running. She wheeled at the start and beat the others away from the post. Jockey Shilling, who rode her. took every advantage of the break and she was in command until the turn for home. There Martinez, which had been second throughout, raced by her handily and from that point to the finish lie had things all his own way to win well in hand by three lengths. Cherryola easily saved second place and Chief Kit. after having been outrun in the early stages, was along in time to get third. The tabled history of the Mohawk Stakes is given below : Year. Winner. It went to George Odoins Follie Levy, a tllly that recently suffered disqualification after she had beaten Mexonaa. Today A. Walsh, who ride Pol lie Levy, did not permit her to race off in front, but followed closely enough behind Hose Queen so that when the Hildrcth lillv was through she assumed the lead in the stretch. Right at the finish jockev Notter brought Melisaudo along with a great rush, but she failed to catch Follie Levy, though running her to a short half-length at the finish. The steeplechase of the dav was for selling platers and S. C. Hildrcth scored with Black Bridge. Tlys-tledale was second and old Grandpa third. After the race it was reported that Grandpa had broken down in the running, but the old fellow has gone wrong many times before this, only to reappear. The only accident in the race was at the thirteenth fence, when Paprika made a had lauding ami unseated English. Though the jockey was dragged some distance bi lore be could shake his left foot free from the stirrup, he escaped with some scratches. Miss Nelt was winner of the first t wo-yoar-old race, while the other went to Rlackfoot. the favorite. The success of the present meeting has influenced memliers uf the Saratoga Association to announce their intention of making a bid for dates cuvering at least a month fur Saratoga racing in 1011.
