DUGAMS RIDE CRITICISED JOCKEY RECENTLY REINSTATED BLAMED FOR DEFEAT OF RESTIGOUCHE. After Failure in Catskill Stakes. Son of Commando Is Claimed by F. S. P. Randolph and S. C. Hildreth Retaliates by Taking Racquet. Saratoga. N. ST., August 19. — The miserably incompetent ride of E. Dugan, August Belmonts re-•eenlly reinstated jockey, accounted for the defeat of s. c Hildreth a Reattgooeae in the running of the Catskill Selling Stakes, the feature race offered today by the Saratoga Association. Not only did Mr. Hildreth lose the race, hut later Restigouche «■ rlaland by 1. S. P. Randolph for ,700. Mr. Hildreth retaliated by claiming Racquet, the Randolph starter, for a like amount. The race was one that was full of incident besides the running itself, : r after Pretend had won Dave Woodford, trainer lor Frank Nolans Beverwyck Stable, ran him up from ,000. his entered price, to .,600. The horse was protected and retained for Thomas Monahan by irainer Thomas Welsh. Later Welsh called Wood-lord harshly to account for running up the horse. Complaint of this was made to the stewards by AVodfoid and it is probable that action will lie taken, though no ruling was handed down today. Over night there was a heavy downpour of rain si ml the track, alter being at its best yesterday, was «loep and heavv today. This resulted in numerous scratches and it also resulted in some form upsets. The Catskill was a seven-furloags dash and Reti-gouche was only asked to take up 1M ]K unds. being entered to be sold for 1,500. 1nder this weight be seemed to be the surest winner of the afternoon, for had it been a handicap Mr. Hildreth could hardly have expected less than from 122 to 12T pounds on his horse considering the character ol the opposition. Racquet was the DM to cut out all the pace and though Resligouche likes to run in front and lie showed an eagerness to go along. Dugan made no effort to go after Racquet until be had left the backstretch. Then, when he did make bis move, lie ran into a aoeget on the tail, made by Racquet and Cohort, which was racing along in second place. This knocked him back, but he still bad a g »od winning chance had Dugan ridden with becoming energy through the stretch. Pretend, the winner, caught the leader* at the final furlong post and came away easily, with Racquet second and Restigouche third. The tabled history of the Catskill is given below: Year. Winner.
