NORFOLK PLANS AMBITIOUS BACKERS OF JAMESTOWN TRACK TO MAKE IT IMPORTANT RACING POINT. Hope to Give Thirty Days of Racing Each Spring and Fall — Business Organizations of Norfolk Lend Aid to the Project. Norfolk, V;i.. September s. — The meeting which the Jamestown Jockey Club will conduct this fall from November 1 lo HI has moused the enthusiasm of local people and strong efforts will be put forth to make tliis one of the places where horsemen may depend upon at least thirty days of racing each spring and fall. The Jamestown Meeting this fall will carry the indorsement of the Norfolk Board of Trade, Business Mens Association, the Industrial Commission and the Merchants Association. These lnxlies compose all the hest and most influential people of the city. The railroads and steamship companies have promised reduced rates from all points to Norfolk daring th" meeting, and the Merchants Association proposes to put on a "Hade excursion" to assist the jockey cluli in bringing the people from other cities, in the state as well as from the Carolinas. All places of business will done at 1 oclock on the opening day to give the local people a chance to go to the track and see the races and au aviation moot that will he held at the track that day. Norfolk, with its suburbs, is a city of over 100,- KM inhabitants, and is only five hours ride distant from Washington, seven from Baltimore, nine from Philadelphia, and twelve hours from New York. It is a delightful trip by steamer from any of these points, and the fare is cheap. The steamship companies only charge | er head to ship horses from Baltimore to Norfolk, and they bring the attendant* free. The plant at Norfolk consists of a fast mile track, with good grandstand and stables, and av beautlfal clubl sc. There is good street car service to the gr lstand and a lioulevard for automobiles ami carriage*- Norfolk is noted for its tine hotels. Claim tag to surpass any city of its size in the United States in this respect, as there are sev-. cal line hotels built during the .Jamestown Exposition, iu addition to the many large hotels that have 1 alwavs been the citys pride. The climate of Norfolk is delightful, the gulf stream making Hie winter mild and pleasant. Old Point Comfort, a notable winter resort, is only thirty minutes ride from the race traek. This would Ik- as good a place as could he found anywhere to winter horses, ami the management proposes this fall to arrange to lake care of all who care to Winter at this point. This is the last place where there will be racing in the east this fall, and it will he the first place in the east to open next spring.
