WOULD PERPETUATE SPORT DIRECTORS OF MONCRIEF PARK HAVE PROPOSITION FOR FLORIDA LEGISLATORS. Plan Is for Racing Association to Assume All Expense and Detail of Mammoth State Fair if Betting Embargo Is Lifted. Jacksonville, Fla., January 2G. The card ottered tit Moncrief Park this afternoon did not call for much. Five of the six races were cheap selling affairs in which ordinary lields went to the post. v The only close finish of the afternoon came with the running of the two-year-old race, in which Joe Knight beat Bxealibur a neck. Joe Knight, tho winner, showed a splendid performance, lie was curried wide from the start and. went to the outside fence in entering the homestretch. It looked as if the colt would go over the fence, but he propped for a few strides and saved himself. When straightened out he came again and; finishing with splendid courage, beat Kxealibur in the closing strides. Joe Knight is a hauilsoine youngster by Ben Stroma Fair Empress, and his work here is said to have been as good as any youngster in local training. Eastern owners gathered -two of the purses, Dress Parade II. winning for 0. L. Richards and Spos Nostra for AY. O. Scully. The victory of Dress Parade II. resulted in a change of ownership. He was entered for $,".00 and was boosted to 1,100 by I. It. Bradfield, who secured hiin at that figure. The directors of the Florida Live Stock and Agricultural State Fair Association will make an effort to obtain from the legislature of Florida this winter ollicial sanction to continue racing with open betting. They will proKse that if the embargo against betting, scheduled to go into effect May 1 be lifted, the stockholders of the racing association will guaranty.! to run a state fair every season, and will donale 0,000 per annum to be split up in the form of prizes. Racing, in Florida is popular. Two race meetings here have proved this. The citizens of the state have benefited by the sport. The hotels, boarding-house keepers and merchants arc generally in favor of a continuance of legitimate racing during the winter months. Hacked by this support, the directors of the race track feel certain that the proposition will be met favorably by the legislature. The racing officials say that they will manage- the lair subject to supervision, free of charge. They do not hesitate to say that the 0,000 offer will not be a fixture in the matter of money donated, but that each season they will increase the sum. The track has helped the farmers by distributing thoroughbred stallions and mares throughout the state and this feature of the associations work will be given added imiortaiice in future. .Manager II. D. Brown has announced that the present meeting at Moneriof Park will come to an end witli the running of the American Derbv on Saturday, April 1. By that date the association will have carried out all the promises made, aud every horseman will have had ample chance to win a purse or two. Some of them will have won a great many during the scheduled period. Last season the meeting was extended a week over the scheduled time, solely for the purpose of giving the smaller stables a chance to gather getaway money. There was nothing in it for the association, as the attendance fell off. due to the exodus of the regulars to the north for the opening at Norfolk. This season the meeting will come to a close in the proverbial blaze of glory by the running of the richest of the thirtv-eight stakes on the final day. H. 1. Williams has advertised his stable for sale and if the horses are not disposed of before the end or the meeting they will go under the hammer along with those from the Clopton string. The attendance was good and speculation brisk. Despite rain which fell last night the going was fast. There were many arrivals from the north today, among the prominent ones being Mortimer Mahoney. who came south to consult witli Robert Levy relative to the spring meeting of the Jamestown Jockey Club. Mr. Mahoney has a host of friends among the layers and many of them have promised to be on hand at Norfolk this spring. He will spend several days in Jacksonville before leaving for Southern Florida on a fishing trip. James Ross, secretary of the Kentucky Association, returned from Tampa this morning and left for Lexington tonight. Mr. Ross has bad great success in his mission here and at Tampa for entries to the stakes to 1m? run at the spring meeting at Lexington. Garrett Wilson will be here in a couple of weeks to arrange with the horsemen for stable room at the Kentucky Association course. Neil Enrigbt arrived from Louisville this morning and will siend h couple of weeks in Jacksonville before returning north. Recent work-outs at Moncrief. Weather clear; track fast.
