JUAREZ TRACK REMAINS HEAVY. Cold and Unseasonable Temperature Keeps Attendance at Mexican Course Down to Regulars. EI Paso. Tex:.. February 20. Fnder the most adverse weather conditions, the attendance at Juarez yesterday was almost up to the usual Sunday proportions. The track conditions marred the racing to a perceptible extent, but despite this handicap a good days sport resulted, a majority of the linishes being close anil exciting. Form followers were much at sea, however, one lone favorite scoring. The tiflh race was spoiled by the running away of Sigurd, the heavily backed favorite, for three-quarters of a mile before the start, leaving such little contention that the race was a procession throughout, with Du P.ois, a Kentucky Derby eligible, an easy winner. Harry McCarthy and W. Collins were among the arrivals from California. The. stables of 15. S. Michell. A. G. I.lakeley. Oakwood Slock Ranch. C. S. Wilson, J. Weaver and W. J. Speirs arrived yesterday morning from Oak-laud. Jockeys E. Martin and J. Glass accompanied Hie horses. C. P. Walerhouses Derby candidates. Eddie Dale and Maxdiee, were included in the shipment. Horsemen report a scarcity of cars at Oakland and say that many are awaiting an opportunity to ship. Senor Alex de la Arena is gradually getting together one of the best studs of young mares in .Mexico, and he expects some good results from his venture in the next few years. W. G. Vanke will have a weeding-out of his stable before leaving Juarez for Kentucky the coining spring. Among the horses he will dispose of while here is Soon. W. A. Watkins paid J. X. Tholl .51,500 Tor Sigurd. El Paso. Tex.. February 20. Weather that was intensely cold for this section and the poorest card of the season greatly affected the attendance today, the smallest crowd of the meeting turning out. Notwithstanding the trying track conditions, favorites fared well, three of the races going to well-backed public, choices. A. IS. Spreckels wired today that owing to illness among the horses he contemplated shipping here he was compelled to cancel all stake engagements for the meeting and, while regretting his inability to race here, ex-pressed to the management his lest wishes Tor their future success. T. W. OBrien arrived today from Oakland and will operate during the rest vt the season. The Juarez track remains extremely heavy and it is evident that some days will elapse ere fast going again prevails.
