NOTES OF THE TURF. The entries for the twelve stakes to be run at Churchill Downs this spring total 1,139. This is an average or 95 to the stake. Last year the total was SO!!, an average of 811 to the stake. The increase reflects the keen interest that is being taken iu Kentucky racing this season. While the general impression prevails that the local racing season will not opeii before May 15 at Belmont Park, after the sessions at Jamestown and Pimlico, it is said on good "authority that the turf magnates have not given up tin idea of the usual start at Aqueduct 011 .April 15. If certain things transpire between now mid the first of next month it is said that the usual schedule can be quickly arranged and that a program can be fraiueil over night, that will attract plenty of racing material. If It Is possible to begin racing as early as usual the Jockey Club will not hesitate to start the machinery, it ia said. New York Sun.
