LEXINGTON SPORT GLORIOUS BONNIE KELSO REDUCES TRACK RECORD IN WINNING CAMDEN HANDICAP. Carman Horse Hakes Wonderful Showing by Running Mile and a Quarter in 2:04 with 127 Pounds Up Chapultepec Sets Now Record. Lexington, Ky., May 0. Considered from every angle the racing, the time, the tracks condition, the weather, tho attendance and the betting this day, the seventh of the Kentucky Associations spring meeting, was one of the greatest in the long history of the famous old Lexington course. Certainly not in the last twenty-live years has there been a larger or more representative crowd than that which filled every available inch of the grandstand and clubhouse, swarmed the betting ring, and congested the paddock and walks and even overflowed to the infield. Tho betting was the heaviest since the pari-inutuels have been iu operation hero and the seven machines were not sufficient to handle tho wagers that were wanted iu the time allotted for speculation, particularly on the third and fourth races. The weather was perfect and the track was in its very best condition, which accounted for two new records that were made. Tho feature of the splendid card was the Camden Handicap, for three-year-olds and over, at one mile and a quarter, named in lienor of Johnson N. Camden, master of Hartland Stud and member of tho Kentucky State Racing Commission, who added ,000 to the event, making its gross value with four starters today ,330, in addition to the handsome 50 silver loving cup that was the gift of tho Kentucky Association to the qwncr of the winner. Of the six that were carded to start Cherryola and Governor Gray, winner of the American Derby at Jacksonville and a prominent candidate for tho Kentucky Derby, to the be run at Louisville next Saturday, declined the issue, leaving only four to go, to the post, with Bonnie Kelso, the top weight, most in esteem over Joe Morris, with Boola Boola and Console tho outsiders. The publics estimate of their ability was well sustained, for the quartet finished according to betting expectations. The victory of Bonnie Kelso was foreshadowed by his performance of Thursday, when with 123 pounds up. he won at a mile and a sixteenth in 1:452. setting a new track record for the distance. But aside from his own stable connections there were few who expected, however much they believed in him, that the six-year-old son of Waterboy and Thuanclla, for which Mr. Carman gave ?2.700 last fall, would race so brilliantly as he did this afternoon, or that under such weight he would run a mile and a quarter in 2:04, clipping two seconds from the track record made last year by the five-year-old Hans with 111 pounds up. Jockey Archibald, on the winner, bided his time and was content to trail Joe Morris and Boola Boola until rounding the" lower turn, where he called on Bonnie Kelso and it required little effort for the Carman representative to pass into the lead and win by a commanding margin. Joe Morris, under a hard drive, outstayed Boola Boola for second place. The handican at three-quarters that preceded the feature was of interest from the fact that Meridian, a Kentucky Derby eligible and one of the probable choices in that event, was making his debut and was opposed by a good band of sprinters that were likely to test his mettle. The public, however, felt sanguine that he would acquit himself, successfully, for they installed him favorite. The colt showed a sparkling performance, but was not good enough to beat tho suddenly improved Chapultepec, which led from barrier rise to finish and clipped three-fifths of a second from the former track mark by running the distance in 1:12. Meridian was sent on an extra quarter and was timed the full mile in 1:39?. His showing today, considering that it was his first public appearance for the year, was a creditable one and lie is generally reganlpd by smart trainers and close observers as a dangerous contender for the big prize on the opening day at Churchill Downs. Johnson N. Camdens AAheelwright, running in blinkers today, made the two-year-olds in the second race look cheap. He will go in the Breeders Futurity coupled with Praetorian Tuesday, and it is predicted that they will do hard to beat. Joo Knight, a supposedly good colt from Jacksonville, was the choice for this race and ran last. The opening race went to C. C. Aan Meters Princess Industry, she stalling off Star Blue, the favorite. Mr. Van Meter scored a double when Tourist got homo in the firth a head iu advance of JClm, witli the favorite, Slim Princess, in the ruck. Both Princess Industry and Tourist paid long odds. The closing race was wou easily by AV. G. Yaukes Swish, after he had worn down Baccarra. Tills was the first time the Yanke colors were seen in front here during the meeting. Jockeys Kennedy and McTaggart were suspended for the remainder pf the meeting by starter "Mars Cassidy for misbehavior at the post. AV. G. Yanke will ship Round the World and nine other racers that he has had at tho track here to Louisville tomorrow. The disappointing showing of Joe Knight was a severe upset for the smart brigade, he being accounted one of the best betting propositions of the afternoon. Barney Schreiber stated today that unless there is a revival of racing at New York or Chicago he would ship a consignment of broodmares to Melbourne Australia, to be disposed of. They will bo sent In charge of Dr. Leach. Irving H. Whcatcroft. owner of the St. .lames Stud, has also anounccd his intention of sending a band of broodmares at the same time and both consignments will likely number about 100 head. Governor Grays trial this morning for the Kentucky Derby was a satisfactory one to trainer AAM1-liams. Many other trainers who witnessed the colts work aver that he could have run tho. first mile in 1:39 had ho been urged to do so. Governor Gray figured this morning in the most sensational trial to the credit of any Kentucky Derby a eligible. AVith 130 pounds up he worked a mile in 1:41 and was pulled up a mile and an eighth in 1:503. His fractional time was 12. 24. 49J. 1:115. Other moves this morning included the following: Barn Daueo Mile in 1:485. Buckhorn Half mile in 4Si, handily. County Tax Three-quarters in 1:15. Dainty Dame Half mile in 502.
