■ i i MR. RYAN STARTS OFF WELL PROMINENT EASTERN FINANCIER MAKES SUCCESSFUL DEBUT AS OWNER. Wondawhy, First Racer to Carry His Colors, Scores at Churchill Downs and Racing Folk Show Satisfaction — Carlton G.s Handicap. Louisville, Ky., May 17. — One of the most popular victories recorded at Churchill Downs in many a day came in the second race this afternoon when Thomas Folium- Ryans first-time starter, Wondawhy, led eleven other oiingsters past the finish. The presence of Wondawhy in Hie race marked the debut of the distinguished American financier on the turf as an owner and the victory of the filly was hailed with delight by owners, trainers and the public in general. The ovation that followed the fillys victory was intended as a compliment to her owner. The fillys performance was a meritorious one and she showed evidences of capability of holding her own in more pretentious company. Sultry weather did not affect todays attendance to any noticeable degree and the usual large gathering again witnessed some excellent sport, featured by .lose finishes in most of the races. The sacra lativeiy inclined had a profitable dayi most of tho short-priced horses taking portions of all the purses. Those with a penchant for getting small returns for big investments on favorites to show fared particularly well. The feature offering, a handicap at a mile and a sixteenth, proved a sad disappointment for the followers of Polls, who have placed him in a das. with Countless. Bonnie Kelso. Ocean Bound and other cracks quartered here. His showing in todays race was distinctly poor, for he trailed distantly all the way and brought up far in the rear. The light weighted Carlton G. winning the purse in han.lv style; with Star Charter, making his first start since his failure in the Derby at Jacksonville, figuring as the runner tip and Mary Davis third. Star Charters effort today makes him loom up as a dangerous factor for Latonia Derby honors. All the races of this afternoon, with the exception of the opening dash, went to owners who had not scored previously during the meeting. The exception was Cohort, owned by R. F. Carman. Cohort was in with a speedy band of sprinters and was held in high regard. He .justified this confidence by making a show of his opponents and winning in the easiest kind of a fashion. Elfin Beau and Byliealrja fought it out for the minor portions of the purse and finished in the order named. Al Muller showed bv his performance that hi- has trained off, for he waa never formidable at any stage of the running. R. J. Mackenzies Venela Strome furnished the upset in the third race when she took some smart planers into camp, including Foxy Mary. Taplina g 1 judgment in stealing into a long lead with Veneta Strome during the first half mile contributed materially towards her success. Foxy Mary waa overhauling her rapidly in the final furlong". The fifth race went to Working Lad. owned by W. Gerst. with Sidon and John Robert second anil third. There wan many green starters in the raea and they were responsible for a mixup soon after" the start. The leading trio at the finish were bene, fiiciaries of the crowding, which they escaped. Mexico and Ganadore were Ihe principal sufferers and will show to better advantage in their next essays. An attempted coup failed by the narrowest kind of a margin when PUaln outstayed Abo in the closing race after a long drive. Entering the stretch Azo appeared a certain winner, but Jockey Goose oerseverid with the Puunf: racer and was rewarded by getting up in the last stride to heat the "good tnin a ii.se. The question of the relative merits of Governor Gray and Meridian continues to lie a topic among owners, trainers and the public in general. Offer* of matching the pair has been made bv both owners, and the association is also ready to offer big inducements for a return meeting of the racers under conditions satisfactory to both owners. During the afternoon it wa.s proposed by Capt. J. T. Williams that the association feature a special race at a mile and an eighth for three y. ar olds, weight -forage, to be run two weeks from next Thursday, intended to bring the pick of the three-year-olds into the contest. Governor Gray and Meridian to start, and good weather and track conditions to prevail. Manager Winn looked with favor on the idea and stood ready to offer a big purse, but when the subject was broached to R. F. Carman, he objected to a larger purse than tfiM iii added money on account of he penalty that would have to accrue to the winner in the Latonia Derby and other three-year-old tixlures to which Meridian is eligible. Mr. Williams is unmindful of penalties, but is ready to start his .■..It against Meridian for !9 or less. The consummation of the race now only awaits a decision from Mr. Carman and he is to let the management know tomorrow. At present it looks as if the ran will be carded and that a meeting between the two chief contenders in the Kentucky Derby will be witnessed at the Downs before they come together again in the Latonia Derby. It is also possible that Star Chart, r will l o entered in tho race and there are some who have an idea the Schorr colt must be reckoned with. Thomas C. McDowell has been requested by several well known on Mia to set a price on his crack two year-old. The Manager, but has lurucd a deaf ear to all propositions and announces that the colt is not for sale. The division of J. W*. Schorrs racers intended for racing on the Canadian tracks will be shipped tomorrow-. Fdda has sufficiently recovered to go with the consignment, but probably will not bo seen in action until alter the Montreal meeting. file Latonia stake book was distributed to UutWS _ men this afternoon and is one of the neatest liooklet* of this character ever issued by a racing association. It contains, in addition t.i the list of entries to all stakes, the address.-* of racing associations and secretaries, racing dates and special memoranda. pages for the convenience of owners in tabulating the pedigrees of their htvtjlbw their work-outs under date line and other intofmatTon. Only seventeen declara I i..ns were made from the Latonia Derby, leaving a list of thirty-three still eligible and responsible for the last pavuient of H . According to Present indications, there will b. about twelve starters, embracing Ihe best three-year olds in training in tin- west. Fairy Bird, the dam of Wondawhy. was purchased by Thomas F. Ryan when he began the or-aanhmtfoa of his breeding establishment in Virginia and the youngster which scored her initial start in todays second race was the first foal dropped at Mr. Ryans farm. The successful two-horse mutnel combination, consisting of Cohort ami Wondawhy, paid 00.40 for each . Weights for the Clark Handicap, to be run on Saturday next, were posted by Acting Secretary Jasper this afternoon. Weights were assigned to . 1 __, Continued on second page. MR. RYAN STARTS OFF WELL. N. Prewitt. owner of T. M. Green, is here for the meeting. His good sprinter is doing well and will be seen under colors before the meeting is much older. The son of G. W. Johuson and Evergreen has not faced the barrier since the Jacksonville meeting closed. A number of horsemen are interested in a proposal to revive the Ashland Oaks during the Kentucky Association spring meeting of 1012, and the suggestion has been made for the opening of such a race for entries to close in July, when the payment for foals is due in the Lexington Futurity race. The Ashland Oaks was discontinued years ago after a long and honorable history. John J. McCafferty. who once raced such famous horses as Hugh Penny. Helen Nichols, Applegate and Winged Foot, was a visitor at the Downs yesterday. During the last few years Mr. McCaffertv has traveled extensively and he recently spent a season in South America. P. M. Civill is here for the meeting. He has been at his home in St. Louis since last fall. He thinks racing will be resumed at an early date in the Mound City.
