N. SMITHS GOVERNOR GRAY, B. G, 3, BY GARRY HERRMANN— SALAMA. RACING OF A PROMINENT LATONIA DERBY CANDIDATE Last war when he was a two year old Governor Gray at times ran like a leally high class young horse. At other times he most decidedly did not. Still, on the whole, lie averaged fairly well and in his racing this year has Scored to his credit some performances of sterling worth. His detuir iii racing was in a four and a half furlongs dash at Louisville, May 10. WW. in which he finished unplaced to La D Mexican, Jack Denasaa and Incision. lie was more successful in his next start, Jlay ol. winning a purse at the same distance by a bead ami a neck from Cisko. Crex and eleven more yaungatera in M%J June 4 he ran next to last in a race over a muddy track. Labold winning, witii James Mc second and Daneeaway third. Then he Was taken to Latonia and ran up to his private reputation. June 1G he won a purse race at five-eighths of a mile by six lengths in 1:09%, with Labold second and Jack Denman third. Two days later he finished second to Mclvor in the Harold Stak s and should have won. He was unlucky and hampered In the race and was only beaten a neck in a fast gaining finish. Bobby Moyer was third and the race was run in 1:00%, nine others finishing unplaced. June SI he won a purse at tivc-eighths from fad J Orniicant. Pennyroyal and seven more, showing great speed and running the distance in .".». a new track record. June :!0 he won a parse at live ami a half furlongs in 1:06%, defeating Oracle, Loehlel and five more youngsters. Next he won the chief race of his two year old career. This was the rich Cincinnati Trophy, run July 2. He won easily by a length and a half from Labold, which beat Golden Kgg the same distance. Niue ran unplaced and the time for the five and a half furlongs of the race was 149%. lie was now saved for a fall campaign and at Lexington, September 1~ , ran third to Shooting Spray and his stablemate, County Tax. in the Idle Hour Farm Handicap, at thlTf njnsrtf rs The track was slow and the time l.:l.""«. At Louisville. October 1, he carried 118 pounds and won at three-iptarters from Mettie Sue. Uii: Mad Xew s 11.. !i7. and four others in 1:1S%, hut had some difficulty in defeating Mettie Sue by a half length. That was his last success of the year. He ran in seven races subsequently and was beaten in all. Third to Little Father and County Tax. October 1"«. at Louisville: third to Round the World and Little Father, at I.atonia. October Ho: second to Star Charter, at Jacksonville. December ." . and sei 1 to Via Octavia. at the same track, December 17, were his nearest approximations to success in tbe course of the seven attempts. After his defeat by Via Octavia he seemed to many to have trained off and was retired 1 rem racing until the following February. His tirst start as a three-year-old was in a purse at six. and a hnif furlongs. This be won in good style from Special Brew, Judge Monek and four others in 1:1,,, a new track record. This race occurred February 7 and seemed to show he was in good form. Tins he confirmed a wiHk later by running the fast mare. Melisande, to a head at three quarters in 1:12%, with such a good horse as Hsula Mil third. February 17 Via Octavia gave him leu pounds and it neck defeat at three-ipiarteis in 1:13%. Of course he was a great favorite at Odda-on. Then he ran fourth to Lahore, Dr. Dnenner and Star Charter in the Ionc de Leoii Handicap, for three-year-olds, at a mile. Lahore carried 119 pounds to his 113 and ran the mile in 1:40. March 4 he won a pane at t hree quarters in 1:13, defeating Mclvor. Imprint and three more, but was badly beaten at a mile and a sixteenth, March 7, by Aldrian, Aylmer and Descomneta. March 14 he finished third to Countless and White Wool, at a mile and a sixteenth, run in 1:47%. Four days later he won from Flla Brynon by a neck at three-iiuarters in 1:13%, with Jim L. third. At a mile and a sixteenth. March 2T . Console heat him a length in l:47,/5, with Aylmer a-good third. All of thi* racing at Jacksonville, good! had and indifferent, hardly suggested his winning the misnamed American Derby. Mut he was taken there and trained in racing with that particular event in view and when it came up for decision April 1 took up his weight and won like a good, race horse. Star Charter and The Nigger were the betting choices, but at the end of a mile sad a quarter, covered in 2:04-,. Governor Orav was fust by a half length better than The Nigger, with Messenger Moy a good third and Star Charter unplaced. He was brought north and his first race subsequently was when he triumphed over Meridian in the Mine Grass Stakes, at Lexington May 10. Here he carried his full weight of llil pounds and ran a mile and an eighth in 1:51% a grand race anywhere. His subsequent defeat in the Kentucky Derby is of loo recent occurrence to require comment Governor Grays record and pedigree are as follows: fear. Aue. Sis. 1st. 2nd. 3rd. cup.
