GOVERNOR SPRY COMMENDS LAGOON RACING. Chief Executive of Utah Expresses Hope That Era Is at Hand When People Will Be More Tolerant. It is positively refreshing to note such sentiments from the lips of a prominent public man as are credited to : rvernor William spry of Utah on ihe occasion of a recent visit to the newly opened track of the Lagoon Fair and Hacing Association near Salt Lake City. The Sail Lake Tribune quotes the governor, in the course of an address following a luncheon at which he was entertained by President Bamberger of the new racing association, as follows: "Bacing. honestly contracted as it has been a I Hie Lagoon rare course, brings in new people and contributes to ihe prosperity of the state. I am hoping for an era in which people at large will become less narrow minded and more tolerant of Others ideas. It di*-s not follow that because one man does not like a certain form of sport that he has a right to insist that others shall not enjoy it. We are differently constituted and there is a wide variance in temperaim nts, so when a sport like racing is conducted cleanly I am not opposed to it." Governor spry then complimented Mr. Bamberger and the. otliciais of the Lagoon association on the magnificent plant they had erected. At another stage of his talk. Governor Spry said that well trained children were apt not to succumb to temp tation. lb- added that if parents trained their offspring property the result would tie far better than anything mere legislation could accomplish. Judge J. A. Howell and others also spoke in the same strain. Among the members of the governors parly were Arthur Pratt, warden of the state penitentiary; J. G. McDonald, president of till? State lair Association: II. G. Knsign. secretary of the State Fair Association: Jeorge S. McAllister, prcsi-dent of the Manufacturers Association: Mayor A. Clark of Farmingtoii. and the following council-men of Farmingtoii. Messrs. Hess. Cottcrill. Rice and White. Councilman White is editor of the Iaiinington Keflex. The Farmingtou otliciais made short speeches, during which it developed that since the Lagoon lace course was established, the town ha- enjoyed considerable additional business. Mayor lark of Farmingtoii spoke highly of the horsemen and their employees located at the track.
