NO RACE MEETING AT HAWTHORNE. The proposed revival of racing at Hawthorne has been definitely declared off. The project was so viciously assailed by certain influences Unit it brought out official declarations of an intention to ft I tin- tracl; with deputy sheriffs, prepared to arrest any person caught in an attempt to make a deal attempt at a wager on results of the racing. So obvious was the prospect of umlesiiahlo turmoil and otlicial interference at the track that it was deemed heat 1" abandon the Blatter altogether. In a statement concerning the matter. Thomas Carey is credited with saying: •Perhaps in the future, in fur! whenever the horsemen feel justified ii miliar forward and guaranteeing the material. I will throw open the gates of Hawthorne and convince one and all that raring without betting is absolutely feasible. Not only that, but I feel confident that a limited amount of it will prove highly profitable to the promoters."
