July 1. — Quite the outstanding feature of the Newmarket First July meeting was the rietory of Swjnford in the Princess of Wales Stakes. This race was formerly one of the "ten thousand I pounders," but has been cut down to an affair of 0,000 added. However, it is still well worth winning, as its net value of 0,400 to Sw.vnfords 1 owner amoly attests. Extraordinary interest attached to the race becr.use it once more brought the great rivals, Lemberg and Sw.vnford into competition and, besides, Lord Derbys St. Leger candi- I date. King William, was supposed in some quarters to possess a good chance of defeating the two elder celebrities. This turned out to be a mistake, hut I the three ear old ran a good race and finished a game third but a short length behind Lemberg. 1 The latter was always a warm favorite, going to the post at 0 to 4 on, while* it was S to 1 against Swyu-ford and Si to 2 against King William. Lemberg carried wo pounds. Bwynford 141 and King Willi mi 121. the distance being a mile and a hali. Swyn-ford promptly raced into a two lengths lead, being followed by Bryony and King William; then, after ■ cap. came Lemberg, with St. Andrea some distance in the rear. They ran thus to well on the flat, when Lemberg draw into third place on the stand side, and at the Plantation Corner drew level with Bryony; but Swynford was always galloping smoothly. and after Frank Wootton bad glanced round for danger he went on strongly up the hill, to bold in check the favorite and win easily by a length and a half, a length between second and third. The time was 2:344 and the race evened up accounts between the two leaders, each having now defeated the other twice. Another feature of the meeting very pleasing to those in attendance was the fact that two of King Georgel horses won races. The first of these and the first race ever won by King George at Newmarket was when Porando -asily w n the B»ttU*»sm Plate in the royal colors, the only regret being that the king has not vet seen one of lus secsea win. This was the first time that the three-year-old has appeared in public, for he has always been a difficult colt to train, and pulled up very lame after his success. As. however, he frequently does this after a good gallop, little importance must be attached to it. The only one to make a show against Dorando •rss Braneepoth, which lost some lengths at the start, but for which he might have made a closer race of it. though it is doubtful if anything would have altered the result. The second royal victory was hailed with considerable cheering at Newmarket yesterday, Mirabeau winning for the king the Princess Plate. The colt ran very fast for some dis-tance in the Woodcote Stakes, and his victory occasioned little SUlUi Me to those who were at Kpsoni. altboqgh the son of Lord Bobs, which did his work in admirable style, was quoted at 20 ta 1. hlira-btau will carry bis majestys colors in Ireland. August Belmont, the well known owner of race horses and chairman of the New York Jockey Club. ulios" lillv. The bet was I promptly taken, and the lucky backer, Who balls I , from Putney, subsequently drew his "hundred pounds , an. 1 one." Danilo II. . Baron S. A. Oppenheims excellent son 1 of Caius, which was taken out of training at the . commencement of the season owing to rheumatism, has been successfully treated. MeCormiclc has again taken him in band with a view of preparing him for some of his later engagements as it was impossible to get him ready for the Hamburg Derby, for which, on his two-year-old form, he was early in the year first favorite. McCormick has not been lucky with bis stable, which unites the string of Baron S A. Oppenbelm with that of Richard Haniel. The run [ of indifferent luck is duo to a combination of cir--e . instances independent of the will of the trainer, whose efforts have been acknowledged by bis patrons. McCormick has acquired the sympathy of all, and regret Is expressed at his decision to return to America in the autumn, when tlie racing season is over. Baron Springer is now in the proud position of having . . won two Derbys in one season. Not long ago his colt Dealer by Santry won the Austrian Derby, at t Vienna, and on Sunday last the Baron won the German Derby, at Hamburg, with Chilperic, which scored by half a length Carslake up from A. von , . Schmledera Monostatoe, with Mr. Von Oertaena St. Cloud third, and the Gradita Studs Mondstein , close up. fourth. Mirage was fifth, in front of Sand, Dealer. Despot, Moenus, Pantagruel and Waterman. Chilperic is a chestnut colt by Gallinule, out of ChUmark, by CfalldWIck, out of Hall Mark, by Sterling. Chilmark was sent to Gallinule in 1007 by her then owner. Rait Kerr, and sold at the December -ales that season to J. Butters, on behalf of Baron Springer, for $." .. "ifK». Chilperic was born in the following spring and accompanied bis dam to Aus- tria. At Hamburg last VtMay the Alphons Brodermann Steeplechase, 3 miles. a« won very easily by the i.iirzenieli Studs aged gelding. Stormy ocean, from Cant, von dem Kacscbecka veteran. Scotch Moor, Holyhead and Jock. The last named ran out. Scotch Moor is now sixteen years old and Stormy Ocean is twelve. The latter likewise won the steeplechase a vear ago. and all the four were bred in this coun- try. Mr. Belmonts Toggerys trial with Quintanona, Monotone and other Palace House two-year-olds found confirmation in the Plantation Plate, in which the stylish filly was always going fast and well, while the manner of her resisting Aurettes challenge marks her as a filly of undoubted grit. She is a si-tor to Sandwich. Raising the qualification to 0,000 for admission to the list of principal winning owners results in dropping Lord Carnarvon. L. Winans. F. Gretb.n and C. S. Newton from the list, while recent successes have brought at-out the accession of Lord Howard de Walden. Sir R. W. Griffith and Baron Springer.
