The first of the annual great sales of yearlings in England took place during the progress of the recent Newmarket First July meeting. Except in one instance there was nothing sensational in the sellimr. The exception came on the third and last day of the sales, when the brown yearling colt by St. Frusquin — Glare was sold to P. Xelke for the substantial sum of 8,000. This youngster is a brother to Flair. Lesbia and Vivid. Of him one account said: "That the colt would realize some such sum was a foregone conclusion. He is a lovely individual, with a dark-brown coat, truly made everywhere and built on most symmetrical lines. That indefinable quality, class, is stamped all over him. The youngster himself seemed to realize that he was the clou of the sales, for there was quite a haughty look about him as he walked round the ring." The chief feature of the first days selling was the disposal of thirteen American yearlings, bred at Clarence H. Mackays Kingston Stud in Kentucky. They brought the best average of any band of American-bred yearlings ever sold at auction in England. Some older horses were sold on this first day, but only yearlings were sold on the other two days. Of the sales of older horses the only good prices realized were for some crack steeplechasers sold by D. Mc-Calmont because he has been ordered to India with his regiment. Judas, winner of the Grand Xational, only brought ,800. but Vinegar Hill and Ballymo-don, thought to be prospective Grand National winners, sold for 2,500 and ,000 respectively. The Mackay sale is here given in full, and also the horses sold for ,000 or more, together with their breeding and buyers: Sales of the first day. June 27 — Clarence H. Mackays Yearlings.
