HORSES AT WORK AT BLUE BONNETS. Great Interest Taken Locally in Preparation of Racers for Next Weeks Opening. Montreal, Que., September 1. When William Garth comes to Blue Bonnets with his string of horses he will once more have second call on Byrne. The ltoys contract employer, Capt. P. M. Walker, who is now taking a holiday at his home in Dnx-bury, Mass., has written to his trainer. Fred Schelke, instructing him to give Mr. Garth the call. The boy has been indisposed for the past few days, but is now all right again and will be in good form to ride at Blue Bonnets. Many of the trainers here have tried to engage Byrne for mounts on opening, day, but the only successful one so far is Andrew Shearer, who will have the boy to ride St. Laurent in the Kings Plate. There are many visitors at the track each morning to watch the horses go through their daily work, lliis is the first time since the inception "of the Montreal Jockey Club that any preparatory work lias been done by outsiders at the course and it has proven a great attraction. There are some good steeplechasers here at present and their work in schooling through the field has inspired a great deal of enthusiasm. There are a number of locally owned jumpers that are getting rather stiff preparations and all have taken to it well enough. The opening of Blue Bonnets on Saturday, September 9, will sec the rejuvenation of several horses that have been on the ailing list. Lovetie is probably the best of the lot and is rapidly rounding to himself. Jack Atkin is another, while Dr. Barkley will he in the same "come back" class. Word was received at the office from Joseph J. Burke, who will serve as presiding judge and han-dicapper, that he will arrive here September 7. This will give him several days to assign weights for the handicaps to bo run during the meeting. The first weights due are those for the Earl Grey Cup. These are due next Monday and will be published at the Windsor race track on that date. Some good trials have been made by the horses now stabled at the course. The Seagram horses, which were the most recent of the arrivals, have started in to work. Cruche dOr, which will start in the Derby Cup. over a distance of one and three-quarter miles, has been mated with Havoc and is in foal to him. This mare has shown, some good trials. The going at Blue Bonnets is greatly improved, due to a recent rain and promises to he faster than at any previous meeting.
